One Tuesday morning, every single color in the entire world… just vanished. This was, somehow, even weirder than last week, when time itself stopped and Pip had to be the one to restart it. But this was different. This was… quiet. Pip woke up and reached for the bright red bouncy ball by the bed. Except it wasn't red. It was grey. The curtains, usually a cheerful yellow, were a dull, dusty grey. Pip ran to the window and looked outside. The grass wasn't green. The sky wasn't blue. The neighbor's house, the one painted like a giant pink flamingo?
Grey. Everything was shades of charcoal and ash and smoke. It was like living inside an old black-and-white movie. The weirdest part? The cereal still tasted fruity, but every single loop in the bowl was the exact same shade of boring. This was wrong. Seriously wrong. But as Pip stood there, listening to the strange silence of a world without color, another sound started to creep in. A low… humming. A thrumming, vibrating sound that seemed to be coming from everywhere at once. Pip decided, right then and there, that a world without color was NOT a world Pip wanted to live in.
So, Pip put on a grey coat, pulled on some grey boots, and followed the sound. The humming led out the door, down the street, and into the park. The merry-go-round was a sad, still circle of grey. The swings were motionless. The sound got louder near the woods at the edge of the park. Deeper and deeper into the trees Pip went, until the humming was so loud it made Pip’s teeth buzz. And that’s when Pip saw it. In a clearing stood a creature. It was huge and fuzzy, like a bear mixed with a grumpy dust bunny.
And it was holding a giant machine that looked like a vacuum cleaner with three enormous glass canisters on its back. And inside the canisters… were the colors. One swirled with all the yellows and oranges, a captured sunset. Another churned with every blue and green, an ocean in a bottle. The last one pulsed with reds and pinks and purples, a whole garden of flowers trapped in glass. The creature, who looked very, very sad, was poking at the jars. It would tip one over, but nothing came out.
The colors just sloshed against the glass and stayed put. And Pip understood. This creature hadn't stolen the colors to be mean. It loved them so much it wanted to keep them all for itself! But now it was just as stuck in the grey world as everyone else. Pip walked right up to the big fuzzy thing. "You can't pour them out," Pip said. The creature jumped, startled. "They aren't like juice! They're feelings!" The creature just blinked its big, sad eyes. So Pip tried something. Pip thought of the funniest thing in the world: a penguin slipping on a banana peel.
And told the joke. The creature’s face twitched. Then its shoulders started to shake. Then it let out a deep, rumbling laugh! A real belly laugh! CRACK! The yellow jar shattered, and color exploded outwards, painting the sun back into the sky! Pip then thought of the saddest thing: a lost teddy bear. A single, giant tear rolled down the creature's fuzzy cheek. DRIP. It hit the ground, and CRACK! The blue jar burst, spilling color into the rivers and lakes and the sky itself. One jar left. The red one.
Pip didn't have a red feeling. So Pip just did the only thing that felt right. Pip walked up… and gave the giant, fuzzy, color-stealing creature a huge hug. And as the creature hugged back, a warm feeling spread through the clearing. A feeling of friendship. SHATTER! The red jar exploded into a million pieces, and red flooded the world, filling in the strawberries and the stop signs and the warm blush on Pip's own cheeks. The creature wiggled its toes, now a lovely shade of purple, and looked at Pip.
The world was back. And somehow, it seemed even brighter than before.
