A single cricket chirped a goodnight song to the moon. That same moon was just saying goodbye to our little friend Milo the mouse, over by his moonlit willow tree. And now, its silvery light was just beginning to touch a tiny leaf in a quiet garden, where our story begins. On that leaf lived a very small glow-worm named Twinkle. She was curled up in a little green comma, watching the big, bright moon. She looked at her own tail, which gave off a gentle, sleepy glow.
It was a lovely light, but… oh, so very small. She wondered what such a tiny light could possibly be for in such a big, wide world. "I'm going on an adventure," she whispered to a dewdrop. And so, she began to wiggle. She wiggled off her leaf, down the stem, and onto the cool, dark earth. The world smelled of damp soil and sweet night-blooming jasmine. She crawled across a pebble path, which felt like a range of great, gray mountains. Above her, the stars glittered like spilled sugar.
Everything seemed so… enormous. And her little light seemed even smaller than before. She was just about to feel a little bit sad when she heard a sound. A tiny, quiet sniffle. It came from behind a clover. Twinkle wiggled closer, her little tail-light bobbing along. There, huddled and lost, was a little ladybug, no bigger than a freckle. "I can't find my way home," the ladybug whispered. "It's too dark, and I can't see the path back to my rose petal." Twinkle looked at the scared little ladybug.
Then she looked back at her own tail, glowing softly in the dark. It wasn't as big as the moon, that was true. But right here, next to a lost friend, it was just the right size. It was everything. "Don't you worry," Twinkle said, her voice full of warmth. "I can be your lantern. Follow me." And she did. Twinkle's gentle glow lit up the way, pebble by pebble, leaf by leaf. She led the little ladybug all the way across the dark garden, right to the edge of a soft pink rose.
The ladybug’s family rushed out to greet her with happy chirps. "Thank you, thank you!" the little ladybug said to Twinkle. "Your light is the most wonderful light in the whole world." Twinkle wiggled all the way back to her own leaf, her heart feeling as warm and bright as her tail. She curled up again, but this time, she didn't feel small at all. She knew now that even the tiniest light can make the biggest difference, especially to someone lost in the dark. And in the quiet of the garden, her little glow pulsed softly, like a happy, sleeping heartbeat.
