Pip took a bite of toast. And then… took the EXACT same bite of toast again. The jam reappeared. The bite mark vanished. This was much, MUCH stranger than when the whole city turned bouncy. Remember that? When Pip’s chilly idea saved the day from all the squishiness? This was different. You can’t freeze time. Or can you? Pip stared at the toast. Bite. Un-bite. Bite. Un-bite. It was a breakfast loop! Pip put the toast down. Then watched in amazement as a drop of milk fell from the carton, floated halfway to the cereal bowl… and then flew right back UP into the spout.
What was happening?! Pip ran to the window. Oh no. It was worse than just breakfast. Much worse. A neighbor was walking their dog, but they were walking BACKWARDS. The dog was un-barking, its "woof" getting sucked back into its mouth. Cars rolled silently in reverse. A flock of pigeons flew tail-first past the window, their cooing sounding like a tape on rewind. The whole world was coming undone. Everything was either stuck in a loop, like the toast, or going backwards, like the dog. And then… it changed. Suddenly, everything went FAST. A cat zipped across the lawn like a furry lightning bolt.
Clouds raced across the sky. Pip felt like everything was on fast-forward, a movie about to spin right off the reel. And then, just as suddenly… SLOW. Sooo slow. A single leaf took a whole minute to drift from a branch to the ground. Time was broken. Completely and utterly broken. Pip knew what was at the center of it all. The Great Clock in the town square. It didn’t just TELL time. It KEPT time. For everyone. Pip had to get there. Running felt like wading through invisible jelly. Then it felt like being shot out of a cannon! But finally, Pip arrived, panting, in the town square.
The Great Clock’s enormous hands were spinning like a pinwheel in a hurricane. Forward, backward, stopping, starting. It was chaos. And inside the giant glass face, Pip saw them. Tiny, shimmering creatures, no bigger than a thumbnail. They were zipping and zooming around the giant gold gears. They looked like little sparks of light, and they were tying the clock’s mainspring into a giant, glittering KNOT. They weren’t being mean. They were just playing. Pip had to get them out. But how? You can’t catch a spark. You can’t reason with a sunbeam.
Pip watched them—they darted from the slow, steady tick-tock of one gear to the wild, chaotic spin of another. They LOVED the chaos. They were bored of the normal. And that’s when Pip had the most wonderful, clever, upside-down idea. What if the answer wasn’t to be faster, or crazier? What if the answer was to be… boring? Pip stood very still. Took a deep breath. And started a rhythm. Clap. Stomp. Clap. Stomp. It wasn't fast. It wasn't exciting. It was the most predictable, steady, boring rhythm in the world. The tiny creatures paused. They tilted their shiny heads.
One of them zipped over to the glass, annoyed. Pip kept going. Clap. Stomp. Clap. Stomp. A few other people, stuck in slow-motion, saw what Pip was doing. They joined in. A slow, steady beat began to echo through the square. The shimmering creatures HATED it. They covered their tiny, invisible ears. The boring, steady rhythm was the one thing they couldn't stand! With a final, frustrated ZAP, they un-knotted the mainspring and zoomed away, out of the clock and into the sky, looking for somewhere more exciting. The Great Clock’s hands slowed. They wobbled.
And then… they settled. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The world snapped back. The dog barked FORWARDS. The milk fell into the bowl. And Pip’s toast stayed bitten. It wasn't a chilly idea that saved the world this time. It wasn't something fast or loud. It was a simple, steady beat. A reminder that sometimes, to fix the biggest, wildest, most tangled-up messes, you don't need more chaos. You just need a little bit of quiet. A little bit of order. And the cleverness to know when to be perfectly, wonderfully boring.
