A baby bear cub can weigh less than a single pound when it's born. That's so very small, isn't it? That feeling of being tiny in a big world is something we talked about last time, with Lily the Ladybug and her Quiet Feeling. Today’s story is about another friend who felt that way, too. His name was Barnaby, and he lived in the Whispering Woods. The woods were named for the sound the wind made as it rustled through the tall pine trees.
Shhhhh… shhhhh. Barnaby loved that sound. But his own voice felt shy. It was a quiet little rumble, deep in his chest. He had a favorite song, a happy little tune he would hum to himself. But only when he was sure no one else could hear. Every summer, the woods held a Forest Festival. All the animals would gather in a moonlit clearing to share stories and songs. Barnaby wanted to go. He wanted to share his happy little tune more than anything.
But the thought of it made his paws feel wobbly. What if they didn't like his song? What if his voice was too quiet to even hear? So on the night of the festival, he stayed hidden. He found a spot behind a big, mossy rock at the edge of the clearing. He could hear the cheerful songs of the robins, and the deep, booming song of Old Man Badger. Everyone sounded so happy. So sure. Barnaby just hugged his knees and stayed quiet, feeling smaller than ever.
Then, something happened. A tiny, flickering light landed right on his nose. It was a little firefly, all alone. Its light blinked on and off, fast and nervous. It looked lost. Barnaby looked at the little firefly, and the firefly blinked back at him. He knew just how it felt. To be small, and a little bit scared in a big, noisy world. Forgetting all about his own shyness, Barnaby did something he hadn't meant to do. He started to hum.
It was his happy little tune. He hummed it very, very softly, just for the firefly. The firefly’s light stopped flickering so nervously. It began to glow, steady and warm. Then, another firefly floated down from the leaves above. And another. And another. Soon, Barnaby was surrounded by a gentle, glowing cloud of light. They weren't looking at him. They were listening. He wasn't singing for the whole forest. He was just humming for a few new friends.
And he realized his voice didn’t need to be loud to be heard. It just needed to be kind. Barnaby smiled, a real, true smile that started deep inside. He sat there under the soft glow of his firefly friends, humming his tune. And for the first time, he didn't feel small at all. He just felt like he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
