A fresh blanket of snow can absorb so much sound, the world outside can become four times quieter. That special quiet reminds me of Rosie the Rabbit and her cloud-soft wish from our last adventure. Tonight, we meet another friend who is about to discover a world that is just as soft, and just as magical. Barnaby the bear cub blinked his eyes open. Usually, the morning forest was full of little sounds. A squirrel chittering, a blue jay calling, the wind rustling through the last of the autumn leaves.

But today… there was only silence. A deep, soft, peaceful quiet. His mama was curled beside him, breathing deeply in her long winter sleep. But Barnaby was curious. He wiggled his way out from her warm hug and padded to the mouth of their den. He poked his little black nose out, and then his whole head. And he gasped. The world he knew was gone. The familiar brown dirt, the green moss, the pointy pine needles… they were all hidden. Instead, everything was covered in a thick, white blanket.

It sparkled. As he watched, tiny white specks drifted down from the gray sky, dancing and twirling on their way to the ground. He took a careful step outside. The ground was cold on his paws, but also wonderfully soft. He took another step, leaving a perfect little paw print in the deep powder. He looked back at it. It was like a little map of his journey. He looked up, opening his mouth to taste the air. A single, tiny flake landed right on the tip of his nose. He froze, trying not to breathe.

For a second, he could see it perfectly. It had six tiny, delicate arms, like a perfect little star made of ice. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. And then, with a tiny sigh of warmth from his own breath, it was gone. Just a tiny, cool drop of water left behind. He tried to catch another on his paw, but they were too quick, melting as soon as they touched his warm fur. A big, deep yawn stretched his jaw. The cool, clean air and the quiet, white world were making him very… very… sleepy.

He turned and followed his own paw prints back to the den, a path leading him home. He crawled back into the warmth, snuggling deep into his mama’s soft, brown fur. She mumbled in her sleep and pulled him closer. Outside, the snow kept falling, covering his tracks, and tucking the whole world in for a long, quiet rest. And inside the den, Barnaby the bear cub closed his eyes, dreaming of tiny, sparkling stars falling from the sky.
