Rosie the Rabbit had one wish, and it floated high above her head. She would lie in the sweet-smelling clover of her meadow, her little nose twitching. Her gaze wasn't on the juicy dandelions or the wiggling worms. It was on the clouds. Big, white, fluffy clouds that drifted across the blue sky like sleepy sheep. They looked so very soft. Softer than her own tail. Softer than a dandelion puff. Rosie wanted, more than anything, to touch one.
Just once. She would try, sometimes. She'd find the highest little hill in the meadow. She'd wiggle her bottom, bend her strong back legs, and jump! For a moment, she was flying. But she would always land back down in the grass with a soft thump. The clouds were still so far away. Her friends would watch her. "Rosie," said a little field mouse, "you can't jump to the sky." But Rosie just wiggled her ears. She knew they were probably right.
But a wish is a powerful thing. One afternoon, a very big, very fluffy cloud drifted right over her. It was shaped like a giant, sleeping bunny. Rosie sighed a big, rabbit-sized sigh. It was just too beautiful. And too far. Feeling a little bit sad, she decided to hop home for a nap. She took a different path today, through a part of the meadow she didn't often visit. She hopped past the tall daisies and under the ferns. And then… she stopped.
Right in front of her was a patch of the meadow that glowed. It was covered, from one end to the other, in the tiniest, puffiest, whitest flowers she had ever seen. It wasn't grass. It was a blanket of white clover, all blooming at once. It looked… just like a piece of the sky had fallen down to rest. Rosie took a slow, careful hop forward. Then another. She lowered her head and gently nudged one of the flower puffs with her nose. It was soft.
So, so soft. It was even softer than she had imagined a cloud would be. A happy little shiver went all the way from her nose to her tail. Slowly, she lay down in the middle of the patch. The white flowers cushioned her body, cool and soft against her fur. She was surrounded. It felt like she was floating. She closed her eyes. She had done it. She was touching a cloud. The sun warmed her back, and the scent of clover filled the air. She didn't need to jump to the sky after all.
The softest, most wonderful cloud in the world was right here, waiting for her in her very own meadow.
