A single gray squirrel can hide up to ten thousand nuts in one season. And just like Rosie the rabbit learned in our last story that even a rainy day has its own kind of sunshine, a little squirrel named Pip was about to discover his own special magic. Pip was sitting at the bottom of a great big oak tree. He wasn’t playing chase with his friends. He was watching a tiny ladybug, with seven perfect black dots, crawl all the way up a single blade of grass. In the distance, he could hear Barnaby the bear cub laughing and Squeaky the mouse squeaking as they played.
Pip felt a little… quiet inside. A little bit lonely. Barnaby and Squeaky were playing their favorite game—tossing Barnaby’s lucky pinecone. It wasn’t just any pinecone. It was smooth and round, with a perfect swirl that went all the way to the top. “Higher, Squeaky, throw it HIGHER!” roared Barnaby with a happy rumble. Squeaky, with all his might, tossed the pinecone up… up… up… so high it seemed to touch a cloud. And then… it was gone. They looked everywhere.
They rustled in the bushes. They peeked under ferns. “It’s gone,” Barnaby mumbled, his big bear shoulders drooping. “My lucky pinecone is gone forever.” Squeaky ran in frantic circles, his whiskers twitching with worry. They both ran over to Pip. “Did you see it? Pip, did you see where it went?” Pip shook his head slowly. He had been watching his ladybug. He hadn't seen the pinecone at all. A heavy feeling settled in his tummy. He wished he had been playing their game.
He wished he could help. But then, seeing his big friend look so very sad… Pip had an idea. He didn’t run around. He didn’t shout. He did what he did best. He got very, very still. He closed his eyes. He remembered the sound of Barnaby’s laugh. He remembered the swoosh of the pinecone flying through the air. And then… he remembered something else. Just as the pinecone went out of sight, he had heard a tiny… thump… from the direction of the clover patch. The same clover patch where his ladybug was still exploring.
Pip opened his eyes. He knew. He quietly padded over to the clover patch, his friends following behind him, confused. He didn’t say a word. He just pointed with one tiny paw. And there, nestled perfectly between three soft green leaves, was the pinecone. It was safe. It wasn’t lost at all. Barnaby let out a happy gasp and gave Pip the gentlest, softest bear hug. Squeaky did a little happy dance around his feet. They realized that while they were busy with their loud and wonderful game, Pip was busy with his quiet and wonderful watching.
And Pip didn't feel lonely anymore. He felt… needed. He felt like himself. Being quiet wasn't a small thing. It was a superpower. And for the rest of the afternoon, the three friends sat together, not playing chase, but watching one tiny ladybug finish its long journey up a single blade of grass.
