A garden snail’s top speed is about one millimeter per second. That’s even slower than the little ladybug we met, the one Pip the squirrel watched climb all the way up the big oak tree. One snail who knew all about being slow was named Silas. Silas lived in a forest full of busy, bustling creatures. He would watch the rabbits dash through the clover and listen to the squirrels chattering high up in the branches. They were so fast, and so loud. Sometimes, they would rush right past him, sending a little whirlwind of leaves over his shell, and they wouldn't even notice he was there.

He would pull his head in and wait for the world to get quiet again. It made him feel… well, very small. And very invisible. He wished, sometimes, that he could be fast. He wished he could join their games of chase and tag. But by the time he slid over to the starting line, the game was already over, and everyone had moved on to something else. He would just sit, feeling the sun warm his shell, and watch them go. One afternoon, the forest was louder than ever.

The squirrels had found a pinecone and were tossing it back and forth, and the rabbits were racing from one end of the meadow to the other. Silas knew they wouldn't see him. So he just kept doing what he always did. Moving slowly. Inch… by inch… along the bottom of an old stone wall covered in soft, green moss. The moss felt cool and damp. Because he was moving so SLOWLY, he noticed things. He saw a beetle with a shiny purple back, fast asleep under a leaf.

He saw a single drop of dew clinging to a spider's web, sparkling like a tiny diamond. And then… he saw something else. A crack in the stone wall. It was just a TINY little line, almost completely hidden. No one fast would ever see it. As he got closer, he felt a puff of cool, sweet air on his face. He peeked inside. Oh. It wasn't dark. Inside the little crack was a secret hollow space, a tiny cave just for him. And it was filled with a gentle, glowing light.

The walls were covered in a special kind of moss that pulsed with a soft, blue glow. And right in the middle, growing from the earth, was a flower made of pure, clear crystal. It caught the blue light and shimmered with all the colors of a rainbow. It was the most beautiful, most quiet, most peaceful place he had ever seen. And it was his secret. He realized that being slow wasn't a sad thing. Being quiet wasn't a lonely thing. It was a gift. It let him find the magic that everyone else was too busy to see.

He wasn't left out… he was just on a different adventure. Silas stayed there for a long time, watching the soft light dance on his shell, feeling perfectly, wonderfully, EXACTLY right.
