A firefly’s light is one hundred percent efficient — not a single bit of its energy is wasted on heat. Last week, you might remember, we saw how our friend Leo turned a spooky shadow into a brand new game with the Midnight Shadow Wolf. Well, tonight’s adventure is about a different kind of light, and a girl named Lily who was just about to fall asleep… when she saw it. It started as a tiny dot. A wobbly, yellow-green glow, right outside her window. It bobbed up… and down… like a little boat on a wavy sea.

Lily’s eyes went WIDE. It wasn’t a car. It wasn’t a star. It was… something else. She sat up in bed, pulling her blanket up to her chin. The light hovered for a moment. Then, ZING! It zipped behind the big rose bush in her garden. Gone. Lily held her breath. Was it a ghost? A tiny spaceship? A fallen bit of the moon? Hmmmm. She waited. One second. Two seconds. Three. Then, slowly, a little glow peeked out from behind a leaf. It wiggled, as if to say, “Yoo-hoo! I’m over here!” Lily couldn’t help it.

A tiny giggle escaped. This wasn’t scary. This was… a game. “Okay,” she whispered to the window. “I’ll play.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “One… two… three…” She counted all the way to ten, just like in a proper game of hide-and-seek. When she opened her eyes… the light was gone again. She scanned the dark yard. Where did it go? Was it behind the bird bath? No. Under the porch swing? No. Then she saw it. A faint flicker, way at the back of the yard, by the big oak tree.

It was so far away. But it pulsed, gentle and slow. Come find me… it seemed to say. This was the bravest part. Getting out of her warm, safe bed. Her feet made no sound on the soft rug. She crept to the window, pressing her nose against the cool glass. The little light blinked again from behind the tree trunk. It looked a little lonely out there all by itself. And that’s when the most amazing thing happened. As she watched, another light blinked on right next to it.

And another. And another! Suddenly, the whole back of the yard was filled with them. Dozens, then HUNDREDS of tiny, wobbly, yellow-green lights, all rising from the grass. They weren’t a spooky monster at all. They were fireflies. A whole family of them, having a party in the dark. The first little light, her hide-and-seek partner, danced out from behind the tree and joined the others. They swirled and swooped, painting glowing pictures in the night air. It was a secret light show, just for her.

Lily smiled. The thing that seemed a little scary at first was actually something beautiful. She wasn’t frightened anymore. She felt… special. Like she’d been let in on a wonderful secret. She tiptoed back to her bed, snuggled under the covers, and turned to watch the silent, sparkling dance outside her window. The wobbly lights were like friendly little night-lights, blinking goodnight, goodnight, goodnight. And with a yard full of tiny, dancing friends, Lily closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
