Pip’s alarm clock showed seven-oh-one. But it hadn’t made a sound. Just last week, Pip was dodging floating spatulas during the Great Gravity Escape, but this was a whole new kind of impossible. This was quiet. Too quiet. Pip sat up in bed, listening. And that was the problem. There was nothing TO listen to. No birds chirping outside the window. No distant rumble of the morning train. No sound of Dad making coffee downstairs. Nothing. Pip crept out of bed. The floorboards didn't creak. The doorknob didn't click. It was like the whole world had been put on mute. Peeking out the window, Pip saw everything moving like normal.
Ms. Gable was walking her poodle. The mail truck was driving down the street. But it was all happening in a thick, terrifying silence. It was a silent movie, and everyone was in it. Panic started to bubble up. Pip ran outside, shouting "Hello!" but the word was a ghost in their throat. No sound came out. People were starting to notice. Their faces were turning from confused to scared. They were pointing at their ears, opening their mouths in silent screams. What do you do when the world loses its voice? Pip’s heart hammered a silent drum against their ribs. Then, they saw it.
A flicker. A shimmer. From the top of the town's old clock tower, a single, impossibly thin thread snaked up into the clouds, glowing with a faint, rainbow light. Nobody else seemed to see it. It was a secret, waiting for someone brave enough to follow. Pip didn't wait. They ran. Up the winding stairs of the clock tower, two at a time, their feet making no sound on the stone. At the top, in the belfry, hung the great bronze bell, Big Benji. But tangled around its massive clapper was the source of the shimmering thread. It pulsed with captured light. And holding the other end, floating just outside the window, was a creature made of woven moonlight and mist.
A Sound-Sucker! It was slurping up every last noise with its silvery straw, getting bigger and brighter with every stolen laugh and car horn. It saw Pip. It smiled a wide, silent smile. Pip knew you couldn't fight a creature of mist. You couldn't shout at a creature that had stolen all the shouts. So Pip did something else. Pip remembered the rhythm of a song they loved. They started to tap it out. On their leg. Tap. Tap-tap. Tap. Silently. Then a stomp. Stomp-stomp. A silent dance. The Sound-Sucker tilted its head. It had stolen the noise, but it had never seen the shape of it.
Pip grinned and made the rhythm bigger, a wild, silent drum solo on the floor of the belfry. The creature, fascinated, leaned closer. And as it did, its silvery straw drooped. A sound escaped. A single, perfect bird-chirp. Then another! The creature, startled by the noise, dropped the thread entirely! A waterfall of sound rushed back into the world. The roar of traffic, the distant laughter of kids, the frantic ringing of Big Benji right above Pip's head! DONG! The Sound-Sucker, no longer interested in a world that was so LOUD, zipped away into the clouds. And down below, the whole town looked up, their faces filled with relief and wonder, as the air filled once more with the beautiful, chaotic, wonderful music of everyday life.
