Pip’s last spoonful of cereal floated right out of the bowl. It just… lifted. One soggy, sugary O, hanging perfectly still in the air. Then the spoon followed. Then the bowl. Then Barnaby, Pip’s dog, drifted past the kitchen table, his legs paddling like he was trying to swim through the air. Pip ran to the window. It wasn't just breakfast. It was everything! Mrs. Gable’s prize-winning pumpkin was bobbing gently over her fence. The mailboxes on Elm Street were rising like a line of red and blue balloons. Gravity was broken! The whole town was peeling away from the world.
And Pip knew, somehow, they had to fix it. But how do you fix… gravity? The Observatory! Professor Astro’s old workshop on Flickerwhisp Hill! It was filled with her strange machines. If there was an answer anywhere, it had to be there. Getting there was the problem. Pip was starting to feel light, too, like a balloon with just a little bit of helium left inside. So Pip grabbed the heaviest things they could find. Dad’s bowling ball. A giant book about dinosaurs. Three cans of baked beans from the pantry. They stuffed them all into a backpack and cinched it tight.
It worked! Pip’s feet stayed on the ground. Outside was pure chaos. A fire hydrant was spinning in mid-air, spraying water in giant, looping arcs. Cars hovered a few feet off the pavement, their alarms all blaring at once. Then Pip saw their friend, Maya, clinging to a lamppost, her feet dangling ten feet off the sidewalk. “Pip! Help!” she yelled. Pip had to think fast. The garden hose! They unhooked it from the wall, swung it like a lasso, and looped it around the base of the lamppost. With a mighty heave, Pip pulled the pole back toward the ground.
Maya scrambled down. "What's happening?!" "No time!" Pip shouted, handing her the giant dinosaur book. "Hold this! Don't let go!" Pip ran for the hill. The ground itself was starting to groan. The whole town was lifting. Faster and faster. Pip burst into the dusty Observatory at the top of the hill. In the center of the room was a huge machine covered in dials and levers. A tarnished brass plaque on it read: THE GRAVITRON 9000. But it was completely dark. Dead. No power. Pip searched for a switch, a button, anything! But there was nothing. Then, on Professor Astro’s messy desk, Pip saw it.
A tiny, wind-up toy robot, no bigger than their thumb. A little note was taped to its chest. It read: "For big problems, try a small solution." A small solution? Pip looked at the giant, silent machine. Then back at the tiny metal toy. Wait a minute. With trembling fingers, Pip picked up the robot and wound the little key in its back. Whirrrr... click-click-click. Pip set it on the floor. The little robot started marching. Clank. Clank. Clank. It marched right up to the giant Gravitron… and disappeared into a tiny, mouse-sized hole at its base.
There was a click. Then a low hum. Lights flickered on across the machine. The hum grew into a deep, steady VROOOOM that vibrated through Pip’s shoes. Pip looked out the window. Slowly, so slowly, Mrs. Gable’s pumpkin drifted back down into her garden. The spinning fire hydrant landed on the sidewalk with a soft thump. Gravity was back. Pip walked down the hill, the backpack suddenly feeling very, very heavy. The town was safe. People were climbing down from trees and rooftops, laughing and confused. No one knew how it happened. But Pip knew.
It wasn't a giant machine or a big red button that saved them. It was a tiny robot, taking a well-deserved nap, deep inside the heart of the world.
