Pip and the Last Moonbeam: A Breathless Bedtime Adventure

The very last moonbeam in the entire town of Glimmerbrook... went out. It was in a jam jar on Pip's nightstand. He’d caught it last Tuesday. Now, it just… fizzled. Poof. His room went dark. The whole house went dark. Outside his window, the whole WORLD was dark. No streetlights. No sparkly rooftops. Not a single glimmer. Pip pulled on his boots. He grabbed his jacket. Something was very, very wrong. He tiptoed outside. The air was cold and still. And quiet. TOO quiet. But then he saw it. A faint, silvery trail on the cobblestones. Like someone had spilled a carton of starlight.

Pip followed. The trail led him out of town. It led him into the Whispering Woods. He heard a sound. A strange sound. A chomping. A slurping. A… GOBBLING. Pip crept behind a giant mushroom and peeked. He couldn't believe his eyes. A creature! It was huge and fluffy, like a giant, grumpy dust bunny. And its belly… its belly was see-through, and it was FULL of swirling, captured moonbeams. It was a Moon-Muncher! And it was swallowing the last of Glimmerbrook's light. Pip knew he couldn't fight it. But then he looked closer. The Moon-Muncher wasn't snarling. It wasn't growling.

It just looked… lonely. And that’s when Pip had the most brilliant, bonkers, wonderful idea. He reached into his pocket. He didn’t pull out a slingshot. He didn’t pull out a net. He pulled out his super-bouncy, glow-in-the-dark ball. He wound up his arm, like a big-league pitcher. And he THREW it. The little green ball sailed past the Moon-Muncher’s head. A tiny, zipping comet in the dark. The creature stopped chewing. Its huge, googly eyes got even wider. It watched the ball bounce once… twice… and land with a soft plop. The Moon-Muncher wiggled. It jiggled. It let out a happy little gurgle.

And then it opened its mouth and gave the biggest, most spectacular, most shimmery-silver BURP in the history of the world! WHOOSH! Out flew every single moonbeam. They shot into the sky like a firework display. They zipped back to Glimmerbrook, relighting every lamp, every window, every single shiny doorknob. The Moon-Muncher, now much smaller and looking much happier, trotted over and nudged the glowing ball with its nose. Pip grinned. The creature didn't want to eat the light. It just wanted to play. All night long, in the restored glow of a thousand moonbeams, a boy and a monster played a simple game of fetch.

And for the first time in a long time, neither one of them was lonely at all.
