A tiny fawn named Lily had ears as soft as dandelion fluff. She was just settling into her cozy bed of moss, remembering the gentle glow of the fireflies from Flicker’s Light as they danced over the meadow. The moon was a sliver of silver in the sky, and the forest was growing quiet for the night. Lily was almost asleep when she heard it. A tiny, quiet sound. She lifted her head, her big ears twitching.

She took a soft step on the mossy ground. Pat. And a moment later, from far away, she heard a soft little answer… pat. She took another step. Pat. And again, the forest answered. Pat. It wasn't scary. It was… curious. Who was copying her? She decided to go on a very small, very quiet adventure. She tiptoed out from her warm thicket, following the mysterious sound. The leaves whispered as she passed, and a gentle breeze rustled through the tall pine trees, playing a soft, shushing song.

She walked toward a big, old oak tree, its branches reaching for the stars. “Hoo-hoo are you, little one?” a soft voice called from above. Lily looked up. A great, wise owl with eyes like golden moons blinked down at her. “I’m Lily,” she whispered. “I’m following a sound. It sounds just like me.” The owl hooted gently, a warm and rumbling sound. “Ah,” he said. “You have discovered the forest’s echo.” Lily tilted her head.

“The echo?” “Yes,” the owl said, his voice a low hum. “The forest loves to listen. When you make a sound, the hills and the trees listen so carefully… and then they gently sing it back to you. It’s the forest’s way of saying, ‘we hear you, you are not alone.’” Lily looked out into the moonlit woods. She tapped her little hoof one more time. Pat. And from across the quiet valley, the echo came back, softer this time.

pat. She let out a tiny, happy sigh. The forest sighed back. She wasn’t being copied at all. The whole wide, wonderful forest was her friend. Lily padded back to her mossy bed, her heart full of a warm, peaceful feeling. She curled up in a little ball, closed her eyes, and listened. She could hear the whisper of the breeze, the rustle of the leaves, and the gentle, sleepy echo of her own soft breathing.

The forest was singing her a lullaby. And wrapped in that sound, she drifted off to sleep.
