In the high Andes of Peru, the tallest mountains aren’t just rock and snow... they’re seen as living, breathing spirits called Apus. Our magical journeys have taken us to many places, but this is one where the air itself feels ancient. I remember arriving there, high above the clouds. The plane ride felt different, the air buzzing with something you couldn't quite name. We’re going to a village nestled in a valley, where a young boy named Mateo lived. Mateo had a worry that sat heavy in his chest, like a stone.

His abuela, his grandmother, was unwell, and her usual bright laugh was quiet. Mateo had grown up with the stories. Stories of Pachamama, Mother Earth, who gives life to everything. And stories of her great messengers. Especially the condor. The Andean condor, with wings so wide they can catch the wind and glide for hours without a single flap. The stories said the condor was a guide, a connection between our world and the spirit world of the heavens. Mateo decided he needed to see one. His abuelo, his grandfather, saw the worry in his eyes.

He didn't say much. Instead, he just nodded. "Tomorrow," he said, his voice gentle like the mountain mist. "We will walk to the high pass." The next morning, before the sun touched the peaks, they stood outside their small home. Abuelo held a small cloth bundle. Inside were special coca leaves, for respect. He also had a small cup of chicha morada, a sweet drink made from purple corn, the color of a deep sunset. He poured a little onto the earth. "For Pachamama," he whispered. Then he looked up at the giant, snow-capped mountain that watched over their village.

"And for the Apu. For your protection on our journey." They packed a simple meal for the long walk: warm quinoa soup in a flask and soft potatoes spiced with a hint of red aji pepper. As they climbed, the air grew thin and crisp. The world became quiet, except for the crunch of their boots and the sound of their own breathing. Abuelo told Mateo how the Incas, the people who lived here long ago, saw the world in three parts. The serpent for the world below, the puma for the world on earth, and the condor… for the world above.

"The condor sees EVERYTHING, Mateo," he said. "It carries messages on the wind." Finally, they reached the pass. A gust of wind whipped at their faces. Mateo felt small, looking out across the endless valleys. He scanned the sky, his heart thumping. He looked, and looked… but saw nothing but blue. A little bit of hope began to fade. Maybe it was just a story. And then… a shadow passed over them. Silent and swift. Mateo and his abuelo looked up. There, circling high above, was a condor. It was HUGE. Its wings were a vast black shape against the bright sky, the white feathers at its neck like a collar of snow.

It didn't make a sound. It just… soared. It circled once, then twice. Mateo didn’t feel scared. He didn’t even feel the need to ask for anything. Watching the condor, so powerful and so peaceful, he felt a deep calm settle over him. It was as if the condor was telling him that strength wasn't about shouting, but about soaring. About enduring. When they returned home, Abuela was still resting, but she smiled when she saw him. That night, Mateo sat by the fire, sipping the warm quinoa soup. He felt the warmth spread through him, a quiet, steady strength.

He hadn't gotten a miracle. He'd gotten something better. He understood that the mountain’s strength was now a part of him.
