The sound was a soft whisper. Shhh… shhh… shhh. Luna the ladybug tilted her head. She was sitting on her favorite leaf. It was a big, green, shiny leaf. It was her whole world. But the sound wasn't coming from her leaf. It came from somewhere… beyond. It made her feel a little fluttery inside. It reminded her of how Rosie the Robin must have felt, when her nest was so wobbly and new. We heard about that, didn't we? But Rosie had her friends to help her feel brave. Luna was all alone.
She crawled to the very edge of her leaf. She peered over. Oh. The ground was so very far away. Blades of grass looked like giant green towers reaching for the sun. A single drop of morning dew trembled on a nearby petal. It looked like a wobbly, see-through mountain she could never climb. And Luna felt very, VERY small. The whispering continued. Shhh… shhh… shhh. It didn't sound mean. It sounded… curious. Almost like a secret being told just for her. Luna’s own curiosity began to bubble up, a little stronger than her fear.
Her six little legs felt a bit shaky, but she took one tiny step off her leaf, onto the stem. The stem felt rough and bumpy under her feet. It was a long, winding road down. She moved slowly. One foot. Then another. The world smelled different down here. It smelled like damp earth and sweet clover and sunshine warming the dirt. A big, fuzzy bumblebee flew past with a loud, friendly hum. Bzzzzzzzz. The wind from its wings made Luna wobble, and she held on tight until it was gone. She looked up.
Her own leaf looked so high up now. A part of her wanted to scamper right back up to safety. But the whisper called to her again. Shhh… shhh… shhh. So she kept going. Down, down, down the long green stem, one brave little step at a time. Finally, she reached the bottom. She stood on a piece of soft moss. And right in front of her was the source of the whisper. It was a round, white puffball. A dandelion clock, gone to seed. Hundreds of tiny, feathery parachutes were packed together.
The wind was gently blowing through them. Shhh… shhh… shhh. That was the sound. It was the sound of waiting to fly. As she watched, a tiny snail with a beautiful swirly shell peeked out from behind the dandelion. He had been listening, too. "Hello," the snail said, in a very slow, quiet voice. "Isn't it lovely?" Luna’s fear melted away. It was lovely. It was MORE than lovely. The whisper wasn't a scary thing at all. It was an invitation. An invitation to see something beautiful. She and the snail, whose name was Simon, sat together on the soft moss.
They watched as the wind grew a little stronger. One by one, the dandelion seeds let go. They lifted into the air. They danced and swirled away on the breeze. Each one was a tiny wish, floating out into the big world. Luna felt a little tug in her heart. She was still a very small ladybug. The world was still a very big place. But it didn't feel so frightening anymore. It felt full of tiny, quiet wonders. And it felt much friendlier, now that she wasn't watching all alone. The big world was just a lot of small, beautiful things happening all at once.
And sometimes, the quietest whispers lead you to the most wonderful views.
