A single firefly can flash its light more than one hundred times in a minute. Last night, we listened for the secret songs of the night with Barnaby the Bat. Tonight, we’re going to see one of the night’s other secrets… a secret made of light. In a big, quiet meadow, lived a very small firefly named Flicker. The moon was like a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the dark sky. All around Flicker, his brothers and sisters and cousins were blinking their lights.
On and off. On and off. It looked like the stars had tumbled down to dance in the grass. Flicker loved being a firefly. But tonight, his little light felt… well, a little ordinary. He tried to blink faster than everyone else. He tried to make his light shine brighter. But he was just one little flicker in a field of thousands. He wanted his light to be special. He wanted to find a light that was all his own. So, he flew away from the joyful, blinking crowd.
He flew toward the quiet edge of the meadow, where the tall trees stood like sleeping giants. It was darker here. And quieter. He was just about to turn back when he saw something. A soft, gentle glow. It wasn't the blink-blink-blinking of a firefly. It was a steady, shimmering light, hidden among the ferns. Flicker flew closer, his own little lamp held out in front of him. There, in a secret clearing, was a patch of the most beautiful flowers he had ever seen.
They were pale as milk, and their petals were wide open to the sky. And they were glowing. They were drinking in the moonlight, and shining it right back out. This was the secret. Flicker had found the Moon Petals. They only bloom on the brightest nights, and they keep a little bit of moonlight for themselves. He floated down, his own warm, golden light touching a cool, silvery petal. For a moment, gold and silver light danced together. It was more beautiful than anything he could have made on his own.
He didn't need to be the brightest. He just needed to find where his light belonged. Flicker spent the rest of the night dancing softly among the glowing flowers. His little golden light bobbed and weaved through their silver glow. He felt peaceful. He felt happy. And when he grew sleepy, he found the softest, most shimmery petal, curled up his tiny legs, and let his own little light blink… slower… and slower… until it was time for dreams.
