The quietest room on Earth is so silent, you can hear your own blood flowing through your veins. It’s a very different kind of quiet from the one on the world's longest staircase, where brave little Pip learned that even the smallest nighttime creaks can be the start of a grand adventure. This story is about a different kind of sound. The kind you only hear when you’re supposed to be fast asleep. Leo was tucked in his bed, a cozy little boat in a big, dark sea of a room.
His eyes were closed. His breathing was slow. He was almost, almost, almost asleep. And then he heard it. Sssssssssssss. A tiny, scratchy whisper, like dry leaves skittering across the pavement. Leo’s eyes snapped open. He held his breath. There it was again, closer this time, right by his window. Leeee-ooooo… His name. It was whispering his name. Leo’s heart did a little pitter-patter-thump against his ribs. He pulled the blanket up to his chin.
Then up to his nose. Then right over his head. Under the covers, it was warm and safe, but he could still hear it. A ghostly little voice, trying to get in. He thought about brave little mice, and decided he could be brave, too. Just for a minute. He peeked one eye out from his blanket-fort. The moonlight was painting a silver square on his floor. Nothing was there. No monsters. No ghosts. Just his toys, sleeping in their basket. Cooome to the windowwww… The voice wasn't mean.
It was… playful. Like a secret invitation. Leo pushed his blanket back. One foot on the floor. Then the other. The floorboards were cool. He tiptoed across the room, past the sleeping teddy bears and the silent toy trucks, until he was standing right in front of the window. The curtain swayed, just a little. Leo reached out a slightly shaky hand and pulled the curtain aside. The window was shut tight. But the whispering was clearer now. He pressed his ear against the cold glass.
And he didn't just hear the whisper… he felt it. A tiny vibration. And then, he heard something new. A tiny little giggle. It was the wind. But it wasn't just any wind. It was a clever, tricky wind, pressing against the windowpane and shaping itself into sounds. It had been playing a game with him. Slowly, Leo unlatched the window and opened it just a crack. A sliver of air slipped into the room. It wasn’t cold. It was warm, and it smelled of cut grass and faraway rain.
It swirled around his head and whispered right into his ear. This time, it didn't say his name. It told him a secret. It told him that the stars weren’t stuck in the sky, they were just playing a very, very slow game of tag. Leo smiled. He wasn’t scared anymore. He had a new friend. He went back to his bed, leaving the window open just a tiny bit. He snuggled under his blanket and listened as the wind told him more stories. Stories of the highest clouds, and the deepest oceans, and the dreams of sleeping birds.
And he slept, dreaming of clouds and stars, with a secret storyteller brushing softly against his cheek.
