Last week, we solved The Case of the Vanishing Giggles, but tonight's mystery starts not with a sound that’s missing... but with one that won't go away. This is the Tale of the Tiptoe Mice. It began in the deep, quiet part of the night. First, there was a... creeeak. A long, slow complaint from somewhere in the house. Pip, tucked snug in bed, heard it and held still. Then came another sound.

A little pop. And then... a scuffle-scuffle-slide. The pattern repeated. Creeeeak... pop... scuffle-scuffle-slide. It wasn't a scary sound. Not really. It was... a rhythm. A secret song the house was singing to itself. And Pip needed to know the words. Now, some people say you should never, ever follow a mysterious noise in the middle of the night. Those people have never met Pip. With a deep breath, Pip slipped out from under the warm covers. The floorboards were cold underfoot.

The bedroom door opened with a tiny whisper of its own. The hallway was a river of shadows, with the moon pouring in through a high window. The sound was louder out here. Creeeeak... pop... scuffle-scuffle-slide. It was coming from the big wooden staircase. The one that curved down into the dark. Pip tiptoed to the top step, peering over the edge. But Pip knew it was just a coat. The sound happened again, right below. Creeeeak. So close. Pip took a step down. The stair groaned. Pip froze. But the other sound didn't stop. ...pop... scuffle-scuffle-slide. It didn't care about Pip at all. So Pip took another step. And another. The air was cool and still. The only thing moving was Pip... and whatever was making that sound. Halfway down, on the little landing where the stairs turned a corner, the noise was the loudest.

Pip peeked around the bend. A single beam of moonlight cut across the wooden step. And in that silver spotlight, Pip saw them. Not a ghost. Not a monster. It was three tiny mice. One of them was wearing a thimble as a helmet. They were taking turns. The creeeak was one mouse climbing the wobbly seventh step. The pop was the mouse bravely leaping from the top of the step onto the smooth, polished banister. And the scuffle-scuffle-slide? That was the sound of a very happy mouse sliding all the way down to the bottom, landing in a soft pile of dust bunnies.

Pip didn't scream. Pip didn't run. Pip let out a tiny giggle, a little puff of air. The three mice froze. Their whiskers twitched. They saw Pip watching them from the shadows. For a long moment, nobody moved. Then, the mouse in the thimble helmet stood up on his hind legs... and gave Pip a tiny, brave salute. Then POOF. They all scurried into a crack in the wall, gone. The staircase was silent. The house was still. Pip smiled, the secret of the staircase tucked safely away.

The scary noise wasn't scary at all. It was the sound of joy. It was the sound of a secret midnight mouse-slide. And climbing back into bed, Pip listened, hoping to hear it one more time before falling asleep.
