Glimmerwick the Iridescent, First of His Name, had decreed that all temporal paradoxes must henceforth be resolved by a game of competitive napping. This was not a suggestion; it was cosmic law, as binding in his forgotten dimension as the rule that gravity only applies to blue objects on a Tuesday. Glimmerwick, a being of pure, shimmering yarn and one mismatched button-eye, was a king. A king in exile. His throne room: the dusty, echoing chasm of a Kenmore Series 80 dryer's lint trap. His kingdom, the Great Tumble, was a land of soft-edged chaos.
The portal itself only opened with a distinct Fzzzzt-pop-gurgle, a sound he knew was the universe sighing in contentment. Inside, Dust Hounds, the size of small dogs, bounded through canyons of forgotten pocket lint, their passage marked by a tell-tale whumph-whumph-zing. The very air shimmered with a strange wobble-sheen, a light that made memories feel solid and solid objects feel like memories. And today, Glimmerwick was troubled. He was experiencing a profound case of snoodle-wump. The prophecy of the Grand Unraveling was upon them.
A day foretold when the very threads of reality would loosen. To prevent it, he needed the Scepter of Static Discharge, a legendary artifact lost for generations. The Oracle of the Lost Earring had spoken, its voice a cryptic series of clicks and whirs. It said the scepter was hidden within the dread plonk-thicket, a dense cluster of lost buttons and petrified lint, just past the pools of sticky flibbertigloop left by rogue dust bunnies. And it was guarded. Guarded by a creature of pure, formless antagonism.
Glimmerwick gathered his courage. He smoothed his iridescent felt, a quality he called his glim-glam. He would not fail. He descended into the lower depths, past hills of fabric softener sheets and rivers of gray dust. The air grew thick with the smell of old pennies and faint regret. And then he heard it. A sound that curdled the very cotton of his being. Skronk-a-doodle. It was not a beast. It was worse. It was a single, balled-up athletic sock, stiff with age and forgotten purpose. It emanated an aura of pure, athletic apathy.
This was the guardian. The scepter—a bent paperclip still clinging to a shred of polyester—was stuck fast to its side. Glimmerwick knew negotiation was impossible. The sock cared for nothing. It understood no language but neglect. This was a challenge not of strength… but of philosophy. He could not fight it. He could not reason with it. So he did the only thing a king could do. He declared the sock a Duke. The Duke of Perpetual Dampness. He offered it a title, a place in his court, a purpose beyond its lonely, crusted existence.
The sock, of course, did not move. It did not speak. But the antagonism in the air… dissipated. Replaced by a neutral, slightly musty… acceptance. Glimmerwick gently plucked the paperclip scepter from its side. He had faced the void, and offered it a peerage. This was not victory. This was statesmanship. Returning to his perch atop a well-worn 'I Voted' sticker, he felt the snoodle-wump recede, replaced by a sense of kingly duty. The faint hum of the dryer motor sounded, to him, like an anthem. The Grand Unraveling was averted, not by force, but by the radical act of granting dignity to the discarded.
His kingdom was safe, held together by the sheer, stubborn force of his own magnificent belief.
