The air tasted of salt and time. It clung to my clothes, a warm, heavy blanket. Just last week, we felt the cool, sharp spray of the Irish sea, didn't we? This felt… older. Slower. Here on the coast of Gujarat in India, the water whispers stories that are thousands of years old. I followed a dusty path, away from the waves. I was looking for a beginning. A place where some of the world’s very first great journeys began. What I found didn’t look like much at first. Just a long, deep channel dug from the earth. Bricks, weathered by sun and monsoon rains.
This was Lothal. One of the oldest docks in the ENTIRE world. Four thousand years ago, this was a busy, bustling port. I closed my eyes. I could almost hear it. The clang of hammers. The shouts of sailors. The smell of spices—cardamom and clove—being loaded onto sturdy wooden ships. Those ships sailed from this very spot, out into the Arabian Sea, carrying treasures and stories. But how do you follow a journey that happened so long ago? The ships are gone. The sailors are gone. All that’s left are stones and whispers. So I traveled.
I followed the coastline of India, like a bird flying south and then east. My journey took me all the way across the country, to the state of Odisha. And that’s where I found my answer. I arrived as the sun was setting, and the air was filled with excitement. Families were gathering by the Mahanadi River. Children were laughing, holding tiny boats. Not toy boats, exactly. These were special. They were made from banana tree stems, or colorful paper, folded just so. Inside each one, they placed a small clay lamp, called a diya, and a single betel leaf.
The whole town glowed. It was the festival of Boita Bandana. A celebration of those ancient voyages! I found a woman helping her daughter light the wick on their little lamp. The flame flickered, casting a warm light on their faces. She told me that "Boita" means boat. And for thousands of years, her people have done this to remember the brave merchants who sailed all the way to the islands of Southeast Asia. They would be gone for months. Their families would wait and watch. And when they came back, they brought amazing things.
Silks. Jewels. And new stories. She handed me a warm, sweet rice cake called a pitha. It tasted of coconut and comfort. A taste of home, for a returning traveler. Then, the moment came. Everyone walked to the water’s edge. One by one, they gently placed their little boats onto the river. The current caught them. A whole fleet of tiny lights began to float away, bobbing on the dark water. Hundreds of them. Then thousands. It was like a river of fallen stars, sailing for a distant shore. Each light was a memory. Each boat was a prayer.
A promise to never forget. I stood there for a long, long time. I thought about that empty dock back in Lothal. It wasn't empty at all, was it? Its spirit was right here. It was in the hands of the children launching their boats. It was in the sweet taste of the pitha. It was in the flicker of a thousand lights, each one a tiny echo of a great adventure. The journey wasn't lost to time. It was just waiting, here in the water, to be told again.
