A single drop of dew, balanced on a blade of grass, held a secret. Inside, something shimmered. Not like moonlight, and not like a firefly. It was a tiny, perfect star. Nearby, a little firefly named Flicker blinked his light on and off, on and off. He was one of the smallest fireflies in the whole meadow, and his light was more of a gentle pulse than a bright flash. He flew closer to the dewdrop, his wings making a soft, humming sound. He peered inside. The little star pulsed back, a silent, lonely hello.

Flicker knew, with a certainty that filled his whole tiny body, that this star was lost. It didn't belong in a dewdrop. It belonged in the deep, velvety sky with all its brothers and sisters. But the sky was so very far away. Flicker flew in a small, worried circle. "How can I help you get home?" he whispered. The star only shimmered in reply. First, he tried to push the dewdrop. He buzzed his wings as hard as he could, but the little globe of water just wobbled.

It didn't move. This was a very big problem for a very small firefly. He zipped over to a nearby mushroom, where a field mouse named Pip was just settling in for the night. "Pip," Flicker buzzed softly. "A star has fallen into a dewdrop!" Pip twitched his whiskers. "A star? Goodness. They are usually much too high." Flicker explained his problem. Pip thought for a moment, then suggested they talk to Luna, the oldest moth in the meadow. Her wings were like dusty maps of the night sky.

Luna listened patiently, her antennae quivering. "We cannot carry a star," she said, her voice like rustling leaves. "But perhaps... perhaps we can show it the way." That's when Flicker had his idea. It was a big idea, one that made his light pulse brighter than it ever had before. He couldn't do it alone. But he wasn't alone. He flew to the center of the meadow and began to flash his light in a special rhythm. It was a call he had never used before. One by one, then ten by ten, then a hundred by a hundred, the other fireflies answered.

They rose from the clover and the cattails, a swirling, glittering cloud of light. Flicker led them back to the dewdrop. "Together!" he pulsed. And all at once, every single firefly in the meadow began to glow. They didn't fly away. They hovered, creating a river of light that flowed up from the grass, past the tops of the tallest flowers, and pointed straight into the heart of the night sky. The little star inside the dewdrop saw it. It began to glow brighter and brighter, until it lifted right out of the water.

It floated gently up, following the shining path the fireflies had made for it. As it rejoined its family in the sky, it gave one last, brilliant twinkle. A thank you. A goodbye. The fireflies slowly dimmed their lights, and the meadow returned to its soft, moonlit quiet. Flicker settled back on his blade of grass, watching the sky. And he could have sworn that one star, high above, was winking just for him.
