Leo and the Mango: A Gentle Tale of Sharing and Sunshine

One single mango tree in the whole savanna grew the sweetest, sunniest fruit. It was a special sweetness, a bit like the stories we heard about Ollie the Otter, and how the fireflies learned to share their light to make the whole meadow glow.

This story is about a sweet mango, and a little lion cub named Leo. Leo had found the most perfect mango from that very tree. It was a beautiful orange-gold, and it felt warm from the afternoon sun. He carried it to his favorite spot under a big, shady acacia tree.

This was HIS mango. He was so excited to eat it all by himself. He sniffed it. It smelled like sunshine and honey. He was just about to take a big, juicy bite when he heard happy little footsteps. It was his friends, Zina the zebra and Eli the baby elephant.

"Leo! What are you doing?" called Zina. Leo quickly tucked the mango behind his back. A tight, funny feeling bloomed in his chest. He didn't want them to see it. He wanted it all. "Oh... nothing," he mumbled. But Eli’s little trunk was already wiggling, sniffing the sweet air.

"I smell something yummy," he trumpeted softly. Leo’s heart felt like a little drum. Thump-thump-thump. He loved his friends. He loved playing chase with Zina and splashing in the waterhole with Eli. But this mango... this mango was special.

It was his. The tight feeling felt bigger now. He didn't like this feeling. It made his paws feel prickly and his tummy feel worried. He just wanted to be alone with his treat. He looked at his friends’ faces. They weren't trying to take his mango.

They just looked curious and happy to see him. And then he remembered the fireflies. One little light is nice. But many lights together… that’s magic. He looked down at the big, round mango. It was very big for one little lion cub.

Maybe… just maybe… sharing wasn’t about losing something. Maybe it was about making something new. He took a slow, deep breath and pulled the mango from behind his back. "I found a mango," he said, his voice a little quiet.

"A really good one. Do... do you want to try some?" Zina’s stripes seemed to wiggle with delight. Eli let out a happy little squeak. Leo felt that tight knot in his tummy start to melt away. He carefully split the mango into three pieces.

One for Zina, one for Eli, and one for him. And a funny thing happened. As they sat there together, under the shady tree, the mango tasted even sweeter than he had imagined. The sunshine felt warmer. And the sound of his friends' happy munching was the best sound in the world.

The happy feeling inside him wasn't from the sweet fruit. It was a different kind of warmth, a glowing feeling that came from sharing. The rest of the afternoon, they played their best-ever game of hide-and-seek, and Leo's happy roar echoed across the savanna as the sun painted the sky gold.
