Milo and the Moonlit Willow: A Gentle Bedtime Tale

Did you know that a single willow tree can drink over one hundred gallons of water on a warm summer day? All that water helps it grow the long, graceful branches that our friend Spindle the spider sometimes uses for his moonlit webs. Tonight’s story is about one such tree… and a very small friend who lived beneath its roots. His name was Milo, and he was a tiny field mouse with ears like soft petals and a twitchy little nose.

Milo’s home was a cozy burrow, tucked safely among the willow’s biggest roots. It always smelled of sweet earth and dry moss. But lately, Milo had been hearing a sound. A soft, gentle sound, like a long, slow breath. It was a shhhhhhhhh sound that seemed to come from high, high above. He asked a ladybug who was sunning herself on a dandelion. “What is that sound?” he squeaked. The ladybug just wiggled her antennae. She didn't know.

He asked a grumpy badger who was just waking up for the night. “It's just the wind,” the badger grumbled, and went back to sleep. But Milo didn't think it was just the wind. It felt different. He finally reached a wide, strong branch and sat down to catch his breath. He was surrounded by thousands of long, green leaves. As a breeze swept through, the leaves all danced together.
