Every thread in Spindle’s web shimmered with a tiny, captured piece of moonlight. It was a different kind of magic than the secrets Orrin the Owl found in Whisperwood. Spindle’s magic was quiet, and soft, and it happened every single night. Spindle was a very small spider. He lived in the cozy corner of a child’s bedroom, right where the wall met the ceiling. From his perfect web, he could see the whole room.

He could see the little child, tucked into bed, breathing softly. He could see the toys, sleeping where they had been left. And he could see the big, round moon, peeking through the window. This was Spindle’s favorite time. Because this was when his work began. The child stirred just a little, a tiny sigh in their sleep. Spindle knew what was needed. A good dream. A soft, happy, wonderful dream.

He wiggled his eight legs, ready for his gentle adventure. First, he needed a sound. He listened very carefully. He heard the child’s breathing, soft and steady. In… and out. In… and out. It was the sound of peace. Spindle plucked a single thread of his web, like a tiny harp string. The sound of peaceful breathing hummed into the silk, making it glow just a little brighter. Next, he needed a color.

His little spider eyes looked around the room. He saw a pile of wooden blocks. One of them was a deep, calm blue. The color of the ocean on a sunny day. Carefully, Spindle lowered himself down on a long, shimmering thread. He tiptoed across the floor, all eight of his feet making no sound at all. He gently touched the blue block, gathering up its beautiful color. Then, he climbed back up to his web, carrying the blue with him.

Finally, he needed a feeling. He looked at the teddy bear, snuggled close to the child. The bear was old, and fuzzy, and full of cuddles. It felt like safety. It felt like love. Spindle didn’t need to climb down for this one. He could feel the warmth all the way from his corner. He spun that feeling of a warm hug right into his web. Now, he had all the pieces. The sound of peace. The color of a calm sea.

The feeling of a warm, safe hug. With nimble legs, Spindle began to weave. He wove the sound into the color. He wove the color into the feeling. The threads shimmered and danced. A picture began to form in the web. It was a picture of a little boat, sailing on a calm, blue sea, under a sky that felt like a hug. Ever so gently, the dream lifted from the web. It floated through the quiet air, a shimmering, silent bubble of light.

It drifted down… down… down… and settled over the sleeping child, like a soft blanket. The child’s face relaxed. A tiny smile appeared. Spindle watched from his corner, his work now done. The moon shone on his little web, now a simple, silvery thing again. It held no picture, but he knew the dream was delivered. And in the quiet, cozy room, the gentle spider kept watch, his web a promise of another good dream tomorrow.
