The oldest tree in Whisperwood Forest was exactly three hundred and seventy-seven years old. It’s a different kind of magic than riding on Nimbus the pillow-cloud, but a tree that old has secrets of its own. And on its highest branch sat a very small, very curious owl named Orrin. Orrin was covered in fluffy, downy feathers, the color of cocoa and cream. He had enormous, bright eyes that saw everything in the moonlit forest. But tonight, Orrin wasn’t watching.

He was listening. The other owls were swooping silently, hunting for their dinner. But Orrin sat perfectly still, his head tilted. He could hear something on the wind. A soft, rustling sound that wasn’t just leaves. It sounded like… a whisper. "Whooo is that?" Orrin hooted softly to his mother. "That's just the wind, my little one," she cooed, gliding by with a tiny mouse for his sister. But Orrin knew it was more. He could feel it. The whisper tickled his feathers and danced just past his ear.

It was a secret, he was sure of it. He decided he had to know what it was. So, with a brave little wobble, he leaped from his branch and flapped his brand-new wings. He flew toward the sound, chasing the rustle through the silver-barked birch trees. But every time he got close, the whisper would swirl away, just out of reach. He felt a little bit lonely. Was he the only one who could hear it? Was the secret not meant for him? Tired from his chase, Orrin landed on a low, mossy branch.

He drooped his little wings. Maybe his mother was right. Maybe it was just the wind. He closed his big, round eyes and decided to just be still for a moment. He stopped chasing. He stopped trying so hard. And he just… listened. And that’s when it happened. Without the sound of his own wings flapping, the whispers became clear. It wasn't one big secret. It was hundreds of tiny little ones. The wind was carrying goodnight wishes from all over the forest.

He heard a mother squirrel whispering "sweet dreams" to her babies. He heard a sleepy badger telling one last story in its cozy burrow. He heard a field mouse humming a lullaby to a firefly. The wind wasn't keeping a secret from him. It was sharing the forest's love with him. Orrin puffed out his chest, no longer feeling lonely at all. He was part of it. He was wrapped in the sound of the whole world saying goodnight. He flew back to his nest in the three-hundred-and-seventy-seven-year-old tree, tucked himself beside his sister, and closed his eyes.

He knew now that even when it’s quiet, you are never truly alone. You just have to listen for the whispers.
