Pip’s dog, Barnaby, jumped on the bed. He opened his mouth for a big, morning bark. But what came out was… a meow. A tiny, perfect, kitten meow. Pip sat straight up. Just last week, Pip had to chase a magical thread to bring all the colors back. Now the SOUNDS were acting strange? Barnaby tilted his head, looking just as confused as Pip felt. He tried again. Meow. Pip giggled. A dog that meowed! It was silly. It was impossible. It was… happening. Pip scrambled out of bed and ran to the window. Outside, Mrs. Gable’s cat, Marmalade, was stretching on a fence post. She opened her mouth and… WOOF! A deep, rumbly bark echoed down the street.
Marmalade looked so shocked, her fur stood on end. She jumped off the fence and hid under a bush. This was more than just silly. This was a whole town of mixed-up noises! Pip got dressed faster than ever. Downstairs, the toaster didn't ding. It quacked like a duck. The running water in the sink didn't splash, it chirped like a field of crickets. When the mail carrier came to the door, the doorbell didn't ring. It GIGGLED. A tickly, bubbly giggle that made Pip jump and then laugh too. The whole world was a symphony of wrong. Cars on the street weren't honking, they were MOOING like cows. The little sparrows in the trees weren't chirping, they were ringing like telephones!
It was wonderful, terrible chaos. But Pip wasn't scared. Pip was curious. Where were all the right sounds going? And where were these wrong sounds coming from? An idea sparked. Pip closed their eyes. And just… listened. Past the mooing cars and the giggling doorbells. Underneath all the topsy-turvy noise. There was something else. A tiny, musical hum. It was faint, like a secret whisper. But it was there. Pip opened their eyes, a grin spreading across their face. The hum was coming from the old park at the center of Glimmerbrook. The one with the twisty-turny slide and the giant oak tree. Pip knew what to do.
Pip ran all the way to the park. The hum grew louder and louder. It led Pip straight to the hollow of the giant oak tree. And there, nestled amongst the roots, was a tiny creature no bigger than Pip’s hand. It had shimmering wings and big, curious eyes. It was a Sound Sprite! And in its tiny hands, it held a small, glowing box. Every time the sprite touched the box, a sound would fly out of it and another one would fly in. A car horn sound flew in, and a bird song flew out, zipping away towards the street. The sprite was collecting sounds. And swapping them! The little sprite looked up at Pip, its eyes wide with worry.
It wasn't trying to cause trouble. It was just… bored. It thought mixing up the sounds would be a fun game. Pip didn't scold it. Pip smiled. Pip understood what it was like to want to play a new game. So, Pip invented one. "Okay," Pip whispered. "Let’s play 'Put the Sound Back'." Pip hummed the sound of a bee. The sprite giggled and tapped the box. The buzzing sound flew out of the box and zipped away towards a flower. Then Pip barked—a real bark! The sprite tapped the box again, and the WOOF sound flew out of the tree and landed right back in Barnaby, miles away. One by one, they sent every sound home.
The world wasn't a mess that needed fixing. It was just a game that needed a new, better way to play. And Pip was EXACTLY the person to invent it.
