Pip reached for the toothbrush. It was tiny. The size of a single eyelash. What was HAPPENING? This was even stranger than last week, when all the dogs started meowing. Remember that? And the cars were mooing down the street? This was… different. Pip looked around the bedroom. The bed wasn't a bed anymore. It was a tiny white rectangle, like a marshmallow. The big blue rug was the size of a napkin. The door? The door was a little square no bigger than Pip’s hand. Pip wasn't small. Oh no. The WORLD was small. Everything had shrunk! Carefully, Pip swung a giant leg over the tiny bed.

One wrong step could crush the whole room! The hallway was a narrow little path. The stairs were a tiny cascade of wooden chips. Pip had to step over ALL of them in one single, giant step. THUMP. Downstairs, the kitchen was a miniature wonderland. The fridge was the size of a juice box. The sink was a silver thimble. Pip was a giant in a dollhouse. And Pip was HUNGRY. The box of Cheerios was so small. Pip tipped it over. A tiny river of sandy-colored O's spilled across the floor. It was impossible. How could anyone eat this? Just then, a shadow fell over the kitchen.

A furry, rumbling mountain appeared in the doorway. It was Marmalade, the cat. But to the tiny kitchen, Marmalade was a monster. A fluffy, orange, purring monster the size of a BUS. And Marmalade was feeling playful. A giant paw, tipped with claws like dinner knives, swatted at the tiny kitchen table. The little chairs flew like confetti. The tiny salt shaker, the special one shaped like a wizard, tipped over. A puff of white dust, no bigger than a whisper, floated out. And everything got even SMALLER. The wizard shaker! Pip’s grandpa gave it to them.

He’d told a silly story once. "This wizard holds shrinking salt," he'd winked. "And his friend, the knight pepper shaker, holds growing pepper. A pinch of one, a pinch of the other." It was just a story. Wasn't it? Pip looked across the kitchen floor. On the other side of the Marmalade-monster, sitting on a tiny counter, was the knight. The pepper shaker. It was the ONLY chance. Pip took a deep breath. And ran. Past the twitching tail, a furry python. Under the rumbling belly, a deep cave. Pip dodged a playful paw and scrambled onto the counter. Grabbed the knight!

Twisted the top! And shook out ONE single, tiny, black speck. One grain of growing pepper. It landed on the floor. WHOOSH. A wave of warm air rushed through the room. The floorboards groaned as they stretched. The table LEAPT up, growing bigger and bigger. The chairs shot up to meet it. The fridge swelled back to its full, humming size. Marmalade the cat, suddenly normal-sized again, looked around, confused. Pip stood in the kitchen. It was perfectly normal. The cereal box was on the counter, waiting. The salt and pepper shakers sat on the table, side by side.

A wizard and a knight. They looked so… ordinary. But Pip knew. They weren't ordinary at all. A tiny pinch of salt had shrunk the entire world. A tiny speck of pepper had saved it. It just shows you. You don't have to be big to change EVERYTHING. Sometimes, the smallest things have the most power of all. Even a single grain of pepper. Or a kid named Pip.
