The official Grumbleton town charter, section four, paragraph C, explicitly forbids spontaneous joy. This, of course, was written long before the Chronosplinters of Flumpherton began their catastrophic wobble-wobbles, proving some principles are truly universal. But the charter had never been tested like this. Mayor Snibble stood on a crate of pout-puddings, his face a roadmap of despair. Before him, the town square was no longer grey and cobblestoned.
It was pink. And it was giggling. The Great Giggling Goo of Grumbleton had breached the perimeter. It smelled of candyfloss and existential threat. And with every blorp-whistle of its infernal laughter, it crept closer to the statue of Hezekiah the Morose, the town's famously dour founder. This was not merely an invasion. It was an insult. The crisis began on a Tuesday, a day usually reserved for competitive sighing.
Old Man Fitzwilliam, in a moment of reckless abandon, had attempted to eat a snickle-snack while walking. He dropped it. From that single, sugary crumb, the Goo was born. It didn't spread. It jiggled. It advanced with a sound like a thousand tiny balloons being twisted into horrifyingly cheerful animals. The flibber-jabber of the townsfolk, normally a low drone of complaint, escalated into a cacophony of panic.
They had tried everything. The town council read the minutes from their most boring meeting aloud. The Goo absorbed the soundwaves and formed a small, quivering likeness of the mayor wearing a party hat. They deployed the Somber Squad, masters of the soul-crushing stare and the withering sigh. The Goo simply wobbled, its surface reflecting their frowns back as distorted, gleeful grins. Nothing worked. The giggling grew louder.
The pink tide of happiness was unstoppable. All was lost. The Goo was now licking at the bronze boots of Hezekiah the Morose. Then, a sound cut through the blorp-whistles. A thwump. A small child, Timple Fob, had tripped, sending his lunchbox flying. A single, gnarled grumble-gourd, the sourest, most joy-sucking vegetable known to man, landed squarely in the center of the gelatinous mass. There was no splash.
No absorption. The Goo... curdled. A ripple of profound disgust spread through its shimmering body. A sharp, painful zizzle-pop echoed through the square. The Goo recoiled, pulling back from the gourd as if it had been burned. Mayor Snibble’s eyes, usually dull with melancholy, flashed with a terrible insight. They had been fighting the wrong war. You don't fight joy with seriousness. You fight it with weaponized, concentrated misery.
"The gourds!" he roared, his voice cracking with grim purpose. "Unleash the strategic reserve of grumble-gourds!" What followed was not a battle. It was an exorcism. They hurled their most cherished symbols of unhappiness at the encroaching cheer. Sour-sops. Pout-puddings. Unanswered letters from the tax office. The Goo shrieked. It was a sound of pure, unadulterated agony, the sound of a party being brutally, systematically shut down.
It shrank, zizzle-popping and fizzing, collapsing in on itself until it vanished into a single, sad puff of mist that smelled faintly of broken promises. Grumbleton was silent again. The low, monotonous grumbling slowly returned, but it was different now. It was sharper. More purposeful. It was the sound of a town that had stared into the shimmering abyss of happiness… and thrown its lunch at it until it went away.
Their misery was no longer a lifestyle. It was a shield. And behind it, they were, for the first time in their history, completely and utterly safe.
