The very first sound was a quiet… wobble-wobble. It wasn't a spooky creak coming from the closet — we solved that closet mystery last week, remember? This was different. This was coming from UNDER the bed. Lily’s eyes popped open. The only light in her room was a thin silver slice of moonbeam, painting a stripe across her rug. Everything was still. Everything was quiet. Maybe she dreamed it. She snuggled deeper under her dinosaur blanket, ready to drift back to sleep. Wobble… wobble… THUMP.

Okay. Definitely not a dream. Lily’s heart started to beat a little faster. A thump-thump-thump that matched the wobble-wobble-thump. What in the world makes a wobble-wobble sound? A monster made of jelly? A nervous goblin who forgot his homework? A space alien whose spaceship ran out of gas right under her bed? The possibilities were… interesting. And also a little bit scary. She pulled the covers up to her nose. Only her eyes peeked out. The darkness under the bed seemed… darker than usual.

It seemed bigger. The wobble-wobble sound had stopped. Maybe it went away? WOBBLE. It was louder this time! Closer. Lily squeezed her eyes shut. She could call for Mom. She could shout for Dad. They would come running. They would turn on the lights and check with a flashlight and tell her nothing was there. But… what if something WAS there? Not a scary something. But a something that needed help? She thought about how brave she was with the closet. She could be brave again. Okay. Operation Under-the-Bed is a GO.

Slowly, sooooo slowly, she pushed back the covers. The air in the room was cool on her pajamas. One foot on the floor. Then the other. The wood was cold. She crept to the edge of the bed and knelt down. It was just a bed skirt. Just a piece of fabric. But tonight, it felt like the curtain to a secret, wobbly world. She took a deep breath. She grabbed the edge of the fabric. And she lifted. At first, she saw nothing. Just dust bunnies and the lost sock she’d been looking for. It was incredibly dark.

But her eyes started to adjust. And then she saw it. In the very back corner, a little lump. And as her eyes focused, the lump… wobbled. It wasn’t a monster. It wasn’t a goblin. It was Sir Reginald, her little clockwork knight! He must have rolled under the bed ages ago. He was lying on his side, and his wind-up key was caught on a fallen book. Every time he tried to march, he just… wobbled. Wobble-wobble-thump. Lily giggled. A big, happy giggle that chased all the scary feelings right out of the room.

She reached under, her arm brushing past fluffy dust bunnies, and rescued Sir Reginald from his wobbly prison. She held him tight. He wasn't scary at all. He was just stuck. Lily climbed back into bed, placing the little knight on her nightstand where he stood tall and proud. She realized that being brave didn’t mean the wobble-wobble went away. It just meant you were willing to look. And sometimes, when you look, the scariest sound in the world turns out to be a friend who just needs a helping hand.
