Under Leo’s bed, something was glowing. It wasn’t a bright, scary light. It was soft. A gentle pulse of white, like a tiny heart beating in the dark. Now, Leo had seen strange things in his room before. He’d just figured out the mystery of the Wobble-Wobble Under the Bed last week, and that turned out to be MUCH less wobbly than it sounded. So he wasn't scared. Well. Maybe just a little bit. He slid out from under his warm blankets. His bare feet touched the cool wood floor. One… two… three quiet steps.

He knelt down and lifted the corner of his bedspread. There it was. The glow wasn't coming from a monster, or a lost toy. It was coming from a small, perfectly smooth, grey pebble. It looked like any other pebble you might find at the park. Except, you know. It was glowing. Leo reached a hesitant finger out and poked it. It wasn’t hot. It wasn’t cold. It was just… a pebble. He scooped it up into his palm. It felt heavy and real. The light pulsed against his skin, a soft rhythm. Thump-thump… thump-thump.

He held it up to his ear. Could he hear anything? Yes. A very, VERY quiet hum. So quiet, it was almost not there. Like a sleepy bumblebee dreaming of flowers. What WAS this thing? He stood up and carried it over to his desk lamp. He turned it over and over. There were no buttons. No switches. No little door for a battery. He tried tapping it. The light kept pulsing. He tried shaking it gently. The light kept pulsing. It was a mystery pebble. And Leo was a mystery investigator. This was his most important case yet.

He was just about to put the pebble down when his thumb brushed against something on the side. A marking. It was so tiny he almost missed it. He squinted. It was a drawing… a little crescent moon, with a tiny, sleepy, smiling face carved into it. Awww. As he stared at the little moon face, the pebble in his hand gave one extra-BRIGHT pulse. And then, a voice, no louder than a single dry leaf skittering on the sidewalk, whispered right in his ear. "Full." Leo gasped. He looked at the pebble.

Then he turned and looked out his window. And there it was. Hanging in the dark velvet sky was a giant, brilliant, perfectly round moon. A FULL moon. Ohhh. Leo understood. This wasn't a scary pebble. This wasn't a spooky ghost pebble. This was a Moon Pebble. It was a friend of the moon. And it just got a little excited and glowed whenever its biggest, bestest friend came out to shine. The tiny hum wasn't a secret code… it was the pebble purring. Leo smiled. He walked over to his windowsill and placed the Moon Pebble there, nestled between a dinosaur and a toy car.

It pulsed its happy, gentle light, a perfect little beacon in the dark. It wasn't a mystery anymore. It was a nightlight. And as Leo climbed back into bed, the soft glow from the windowsill made friendly shadows dance on his wall, all of them waving goodnight.
