The biggest closet in the world is in a castle in England and it's two hundred feet long. Last week, we heard a strange tap-tap at the window, but this week, the mystery is much closer. It’s coming from inside a closet that’s probably… just your size. Alex was tucked in tight. The moon was a bright silver coin outside the window, painting stripes on the bedroom floor. The house was quiet. So quiet you could hear the soft hum of the refrigerator all the way downstairs.

It was the perfect kind of quiet for sleeping. Until it wasn't. Thump. Thump. Alex’s eyes popped open. What was that? It wasn’t a loud sound. It was soft, like a pillow falling on the floor. Thump. Thump. It stopped. Alex held very still, listening with ears wide open. Maybe it was just the house settling. Old houses make funny noises. But then… it came again. Thump… thump. And this time, Alex knew exactly where it was coming from. The closet. The closet door was open just a crack.

A dark, skinny line in the moonlit room. Alex’s heart started to beat a little faster. A little pitter-patter. Almost like the sound. Thump-thump. Should Alex hide under the covers? Should Alex call for Mom or Dad? No. Alex decided to be brave. Slowly, one leg at a time, Alex slid out from the warm blankets. The floor was cold on bare feet. Tiptoe… tiptoe… across the stripes of moonlight. Right up to the closet door. The thumping had stopped again. It was waiting. Alex put a hand on the cool wood of the door and… pushed.

The door swung open with a tiny creak. The sound started again, right away. Thump… thump. It was coming from the floor, in the back corner, behind the winter coats. Alex reached up, feeling for the little string that turned on the closet light. Fingers found it. Alex took a deep breath, and pulled. Click! The small lightbulb flickered on. And there, in the corner, was a single red rain boot. And every time the house gently rumbled from the furnace kicking on downstairs, the boot would wobble just a tiny bit.

And inside the boot, a lost tennis ball would gently knock against the side. Thump… thump. It wasn’t a monster. It wasn’t a ghost. It was a bouncy ball, trapped in a boot, playing a tiny little drum solo all by itself. Alex reached in, tipped the boot over, and the tennis ball rolled out with a final, soft… thump. The closet was quiet again. Alex picked up the ball, put it in the toy box where it belonged, and climbed back into bed. The sheets felt even warmer now. The room was perfectly quiet.

And Alex smiled in the dark, knowing that even mysterious sounds can have very silly secrets.
