Tap-Tap at the Window: A Spooky (But Safe!) Bedtime Adventure

Tap. Tap-tap. Tap. It wasn’t a gentle whoosh in the woods, like the one brave Lily heard. This was a sharp, clear sound, right at the windowpane. Alex’s eyes snapped open in the dark. The room was still, except for the soft glow of a rocket ship nightlight and the thump-thump-thump of a heart that was suddenly beating very, very fast. Tap. Tap. There it was again. A little faster this time. Alex lay perfectly still, a statue made of blankets, listening. Was it a tree branch?

The big oak tree sometimes scraped the house when the wind blew. But tonight… there was no wind. The air was quiet. Too quiet. Alex’s imagination, which was usually very good at dreaming up pirate ships and secret forts, was now being very good at dreaming up other things. Things with long, bony fingers. Things that float outside windows in the dead of night. You know the kind. Alex pulled the covers up to their chin. A classic move. Very effective against a chilly breeze, a little less effective against… whatever this was.

But the tapping didn't stop. It was patient. Persistent. Tap-tap-tap. Curiosity is a funny thing. It’s a little spark. And even when you’re feeling scared, that little spark can start to glow brighter than the shadows. Alex thought about it. Hiding under the covers was safe. It was warm. But… it was also boring. And Alex was not boring. So, a decision was made. One foot out of the covers. Then the other. The floorboards were cool. Alex crept toward the window, one slow-motion step at a time.

The rocket ship nightlight cast a long, wobbly shadow on the wall. The curtains were drawn shut, hiding the night outside. Hiding the tapping. Alex reached a hand out. The fabric felt soft. The heart was still thumping. A drumbeat for a very secret, very brave mission. Three… two… one… Alex pulled the curtain back. Just a tiny crack. And saw… not a monster. Not a ghost. Not a bony finger. It was a moth. But not just any moth. It was ENORMOUS. The size of Alex’s hand, with wings that looked like they were dusted with powdered sugar and silver glitter.

In the center of its fluffy back were two big, dark circles that looked just like giant, sleepy eyes. It fluttered its huge, pale wings, and then… it gently bumped its head against the glass. Bonk. It wasn't tapping. It was… bonking. A big, clumsy, beautiful Moon-Moth, completely fascinated by the little rocket ship light, trying to say hello. Alex let out a breath that had been stuck somewhere in their throat. The fear melted away, replaced by a warm, bubbly feeling.

A smile spread across Alex’s face. It wasn't a scary sound at all. It was a secret knock. A friendly, fluttery, clumsy knock. Alex watched the moth for another minute as it danced in the air, its wings shimmering. Then, with one last, graceful swoop, it turned and disappeared into the darkness. Back in bed, tucked under the covers, the room felt different. The silence wasn’t empty anymore. It was peaceful. The darkness outside the window wasn’t just a big, scary unknown.

It was a place where giant, glittery moths could be flying past on their way to say hello to the moon. And Alex lay there, watching the glass, hoping for another little tap.
