Lily the lark had a song in her heart that no one had ever heard. Hello, Admin. Just like Milo found his courage last week with his bright red balloon, our story today is about finding a different kind of bravery. It begins in a sun-warmed meadow, filled with the buzzing of bees. Lily was a very small lark, with feathers the color of soft earth. While the other birds sang their songs from the highest branches, Lily stayed low. She loved to hide where the grass was tall and the clover flowers tickled her chin.
She would listen to the beautiful music all around her. The robins sang bold and clear. The sparrows chirped their cheerful chatter. And inside Lily’s chest, a tiny song would start to form. It was a sweet, gentle melody. But whenever she thought about letting it out… her little heart would beat fast. What if her song wasn't good enough? What if it was too quiet? So, she kept it tucked safely inside, just for herself. One afternoon, as she was humming her secret song very, very quietly, a little whisker twitched nearby.
A field mouse named Finn poked his head out from behind a dandelion. He had kind, dark eyes and very big ears. He didn't say anything loud. He just watched her with a friendly little smile. Lily stopped humming immediately. Her feathers fluffed up in a fright. She was sure he was going to laugh, or tell her to be quiet. She held her breath. But Finn just wiggled his nose and took a small step closer. “That was a lovely sound,” he said, his voice as soft as moss. “Was that you?” Lily just nodded. She couldn't find any words.
Her throat felt tight. Finn sat down, making sure to give her plenty of space. “I’ve never heard a tune like that before. It sounds like sunshine.” He didn’t ask her to sing it again. He didn’t tell her to be louder. He just waited. He nibbled on a blade of grass and looked up at the big, blue sky. And in his quiet company, Lily felt her fast-beating heart begin to slow. She felt… safe. She took a tiny breath. And then, she let out one single, perfect note. It was as clear as a dewdrop. It wasn’t LOUD.
It wasn’t fancy. It was just… hers. Finn’s ears twitched, and he gave a happy little sigh. So Lily sang another note. And then another. Her song wasn't for the whole meadow. It was just for Finn. It mingled with the scent of clover and the warmth of the afternoon sun. And as she sang, she realized her song wasn't too small or too quiet at ALL. It was exactly the right size. She had found her voice, not by singing to everyone, but by sharing her music with one kind friend. And sometimes, that is more than enough.
Lily and Finn sat together in the tall grass, sharing a secret song, until the sun began to set.
