Little Courage in the Meadow: Leo the Mouse’s Gentle Morning

Morning dew isn’t rain that falls from the sky. It’s water that comes right out of the cool night air, leaving tiny jewels on every leaf and blade of grass. It’s a time for quiet courage, a bit like our friend Lily the ladybug found when she finally shared her secret song. This morning, another small friend was looking for his own courage. His name was Leo, and he was a very small field mouse. He sat tucked behind a clover patch, his whiskers twitching. The sun was just peeking over the hill, making the whole meadow sparkle.

In the middle of the field, his friends were laughing. They had found the BEST new game. They were climbing up long, arching blades of grass… and sliding all the way down. Wheeee! They would land in a soft pile of green moss, giggling. Leo watched them. He saw his friend Pip zip down a slide, his paws in the air. It looked like SO much fun. But when Leo thought about doing it himself, his tummy did a little flip-flop. The blade of grass looked so… HIGH. It seemed to touch the clouds.

His heart started to beat a little faster. Thump-thump-thump. What if he slipped? What if he fell off the side? The ground looked a long, long way down. He felt very, very small, and the world felt very, very big. He wanted to play. He REALLY did. But his paws felt like they were glued to the dirt — just stuck. Pip called out, “Leo! Come on! It’s amazing!” But his voice sounded far away, lost in the big, wide meadow. Leo just curled up a little tighter behind his clover leaf.

A moment later, he heard a soft rustle next to him. It was Pip. He wasn’t laughing or calling anymore. He just sat down beside Leo in the quiet. “It’s a bit wobbly, isn’t it?” Pip whispered. Leo nodded, not trusting his voice. “I was scared the first time, too,” Pip said. Then, he pointed his nose toward a tiny little blade of grass nearby. It wasn't tall and grand. It was short, and it curved down into a fluffy white dandelion puff. “Maybe… try this one?” Pip asked. “It’s a practice slide.” Leo looked at the little slide.

It didn’t look scary at all. It looked… friendly. He took a tiny, deep breath. He crept over to the little blade of grass and put his front paws on the dewy surface. It was cool and smooth. He closed his eyes for just a second. And then… he pushed off. Whoosh. It was over in a blink. He landed, soft as a feather, right in the middle of the dandelion puff. It tickled his nose. It wasn't a big slide. It wasn't fast or daring. But a warm feeling spread all through his chest.

He did it. HE did it. A little smile crept onto his face. He looked up and saw Pip smiling right back at him. Leo knew he might not be ready for the big slide today. And that was okay. He had taken his own first slide. And in the big, wide, sparkling meadow… Leo felt just a little bit bigger himself.
