If you want your Grandma back... you must find the magical spring in a distant land, and have her drink from its water. That’s what the old woman told the boy. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. To really understand this story, you have to come with me to a small village in Vietnam. Picture it. The air is thick and warm, smelling of damp earth and cooking rice. The sun beats down on the green rice paddies that stretch out like a shimmering carpet.

And in a little house on stilts, a young boy named Tich Chu lived with his grandmother. His grandmother loved him more than anything. But Tich Chu… well, Tich Chu loved to play. He loved chasing dragonflies and playing games with his friends from morning until night. One day, his grandmother fell ill. She lay in her bed, her voice growing weaker and weaker. "Tich Chu," she would call out. "My boy, please... a cup of water. I am so thirsty." But Tich Chu was outside, his mind full of games and laughter.

He didn't hear. Or maybe, he chose not to. The calls for water came again and again. Fainter each time. Until they stopped completely. When the sun finally set and Tich Chu came inside, the house was quiet. Too quiet. He called for his grandmother. No answer. He went to her bed. It was empty. And then he heard it. A strange chirping from the window. "Tich Chu... Tich Chu... Thirst... Thirst..." He looked, and saw a small white bird, about to fly away. In that moment, he understood.

His heart hammered in his chest. That was his grandmother. He had ignored her thirst for so long that she had turned into a bird, forever searching for water. He ran. He ran out of the house, shouting her name, tears streaming down his face. But the bird was already a tiny speck in the sky. He fell to his knees, his throat tight with regret. That’s when a spirit appeared, telling him of a single, desperate hope. A magical spring, far away. A journey few would dare to make.

So he walked. For days that turned into weeks, he pushed through thick jungle, his feet sinking into mud, the sounds of unseen animals all around him. He climbed mountains so tall their peaks were hidden in the clouds. He was tired. He was hungry. And he was so, so thirsty. Finally, he saw it. A clearing, and in its center, a pool of water that sparkled like a thousand diamonds. The magical spring. He stumbled toward it, his hands trembling, his own throat now burning with the same thirst his grandmother had felt.

He cupped his hands to drink, to finally feel the cool relief. But he stopped. He saw his own reflection in the water. And behind it, he saw his grandmother’s face, weak and tired. He heard her faint call. "Water..." He didn’t drink. He filled his small gourd to the brim and turned around. The journey back was a blur of exhaustion and determination. He found the little white bird perched on a branch, too weak to fly. It looked at him with sad, tired eyes.

Gently, Tich Chu tilted the gourd. He let the magical water trickle into the bird's beak. He watched, holding his breath. And then… a miracle. The feathers softened, melting away. The wings folded and became arms. The small bird grew and changed, until his grandmother stood before him, whole and human again. She smiled, and took his hand. Tich Chu never left her side again. From that day on, he was the one who brought her water, who cooked her soup, who sat and listened to her stories.

He had learned that love isn't a game you play. It's a cup of water you offer to someone who is thirsty.
