The Giggle in the Closet: Mia's Brave Bedtime Adventure

A tiny mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a pen. It’s a good thing to remember when you hear a strange new sound. It’s a little like last week, when Leo had to be brave about what was behind his midnight curtain, but this sound wasn't a rustle or a scrape. It was a giggle. A tiny, bubbly giggle, coming from the closet. Mia was tucked into bed, warm and cozy. The only light was from the moon, painting a silver square on her rug. Everything was quiet. Everything was still. Until… . There it was again. It was soft, like a soap bubble popping. It came from behind the closet door, which was open just a crack.

Now, a giggle in a dark closet could be a little bit spooky. Ooooh, yes. Your heart might start to go pitter-patter-pitter-patter. Mia’s certainly did. She pulled the blankets right up to her nose. Blankets are, as we all know, an excellent defense against mysterious nighttime things. She listened, her ears on HIGH alert. Was it a ghost who had forgotten how to say "boo" and started telling jokes instead? Was it a monster with tickly fingers? The giggle came one more time. Tee-hee-hee. It didn't sound mean. It didn't sound scary. It sounded… happy. And maybe a little bit lonely.

Mia took a deep breath. She remembered that being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It just means you do the brave thing ANYWAY. And she was feeling very brave tonight. Slowly, quietly, she pushed back the covers. One foot on the floor. Then the other. The floorboards were cool beneath her toes. She crept across the room, one step at a time, like a super-secret spy on a very important mission. The mission? To solve the Case of the Closet Giggle. She reached the closet door. The little sliver of darkness looked very, VERY dark. She took one more deep breath, puffed out her chest like a superhero in pajamas… and pushed the door.

It swung open with a soft creak. Inside, it was a jungle of hanging clothes and shoes piled on the floor. It smelled like cedar and clean laundry. She peered into the shadows. Nothing. And then… . It was right by her feet! Mia looked down. And there, in a little nest of fallen socks and sparkly dust, sat the source of the mystery. It was a little, round, fluffy ball of lint and fluff, no bigger than her thumb. It had two big, sparkling eyes and a tiny, wiggling nose. As she watched, it trembled, puffed itself up, and let out the tiniest giggle she had EVER heard.

It wasn't a monster. It was a Dust Bunny. But a special one. A Giggle Bunny. It looked up at her, and she understood. It wasn't trying to be scary. It was just happy to have company. Gently, Mia scooped the Giggle Bunny into her hands. It was surprisingly warm, and it vibrated with soft, happy hums. She carried it back to her bed and placed it on her nightstand, right next to her lamp. The Giggle Bunny wiggled its nose, gave one last, sleepy little giggle, and curled into a perfect, fluffy ball. Mia climbed back under her covers, feeling warm and safe. The room was quiet again, but this time, it was a friendly, cozy quiet.

She closed her eyes, knowing that even the smallest, silliest sounds can sometimes lead to the sweetest friends.
