It was a tiny sound. A sort of wobbly, sleepy hum. Wub-wub-wubbbbb. Leo’s eyes popped open in the dark. Now, you know how brave Mia was when she heard that giggle in her closet just last week. She faced the sound and found a friend. Tonight, it was Leo’s turn. He was tucked in his bed, warm and cozy. The moon painted a silver square on his bedroom floor. Everything was quiet. Except for that sound. Wub-wub-WOBBLE-wub. It was coming from the nightstand. Leo pulled the covers up to his chin.
His heart did a little pitter-pat. What could it BE? A tiny spaceship trying to land? A frog learning to sing opera? Probably not. He peeked over the top of his blanket. There, on the nightstand, sat his best friend. Barnaby the Bear. Barnaby was a big, fluffy, caramel-colored bear with button eyes and a stitched-on smile. He looked exactly the same as always. Perfectly still. Perfectly silent. Leo held his breath. Maybe he had imagined it. He snuggled back down into his pillow. He closed his eyes.
WUB-WUB-WUBBBBLE. It was LOUDER this time. And it was definitely, positively, absolutely coming from Barnaby. Leo’s toes wiggled. A spooky sound from his favorite toy? That felt… strange. But then he thought of Mia. She was scared, but she was also curious. And her curiosity led to a fun secret. Leo decided. He would be curious, too. He slipped one foot out from under the warm covers. The floor was chilly. He slipped the other foot out. Slowly, quietly, he crept across the room. One step.
Two steps. He tiptoed through the silver square of moonlight. His shadow stretched long and skinny behind him. He reached the nightstand. He was so close now. He could see the little threads on Barnaby’s stitched nose. He leaned in, his ear just inches away from the bear’s fluffy tummy. Silence. Maybe it was all a dream. And then… Wuuuuubbbbbbb. It rumbled right next to his ear! Leo jumped back with a tiny squeak! But he didn't run. He was a brave adventurer, after all. He took a deep breath.
He reached out a slightly shaky finger. He poked Barnaby right in the middle of his soft, squishy belly. WUB-WOBBLE-GLOW. Whoa. The sound happened again, but this time, a light came with it. A soft, gentle, honey-colored light pulsed from inside Barnaby’s chest. It blinked on with the wub, and it blinked off with the wobble. It wasn't a scary light. It was warm. It was friendly. It was… a glow. Leo poked the bear’s tummy again. Wub-wobble-glow. He giggled. Barnaby wasn't haunted. He wasn't broken.
Barnaby the Bear was SNORING. But it wasn't a normal, rumbly snore. It was a magical, wobbly, glowing snore. It was the sleepiest sound in the whole wide world. Leo carefully picked Barnaby up and gave him a huge hug. The gentle vibration of the snore felt warm and buzzy against his chest. The soft light pulsed against his pajamas. It was like hugging a tiny, sleepy lightning bug. He realized the sound wasn't meant to be scary at all. It was the sound of a good friend having very sweet dreams.
Leo climbed back into his bed, holding Barnaby tight. The little wobbly hum continued, a secret lullaby just for him. Wub-wub-glow. Wub-wub-glow. The bravest thing wasn't facing a monster in the dark. It was getting close enough to a mystery to understand it. And now, with his best friend snoring magically beside him, Leo felt safer and sleepier than ever. He closed his eyes. And dreamed of wobbly, glowing things.
