Pip was a seed no bigger than a single freckle. He floated high above the world, even higher than the tallest sunflower in Shelly the Snail's Dewdrop Garden we visited last night. One moment, he was tucked safely in his flower pod, and the next… a great, warm WHOOSH of wind scooped him up and carried him away on an adventure. "Wheeee!" he whispered, though he had no voice. He tumbled and twirled, a tiny speck in a giant, blue sky.
Below him, the world was a beautiful quilt. There were squares of bright green clover, patches of dark brown earth, and a long, sparkling ribbon of silver that was really a river. He saw fluffy white sheep that looked like little clouds that had fallen down to nibble on the grass. The wind was his friend, holding him up, showing him everything. It wasn't scary at ALL. It felt like being swung gently, up and up and up.
He wasn't sure where he was going, but he knew it would be somewhere wonderful. After a long, lovely time, the wind began to get sleepy. It slowed down, humming a soft, low tune. "It is time for you to rest now, little one," it seemed to whisper. And Pip began to float down, down, down… like a single piece of feathery snow. He drifted past the buzzing bees and the fluttering butterflies. He saw a little rabbit twitch its nose, watching him fall.
He was heading for a small, perfect patch of soil near a mossy stone. The spot looked so… cozy. It looked like the perfect place for a nap. He landed with a tiny, silent poof in the soft, dark earth. Oh, it was even better than he imagined. The soil was warm and smelled sweet, like rain and sleeping things. It hugged him all around, a perfect blanket just his size. He felt so safe. So tucked-in. The day's adventure was over.
Curled up in his earthy bed, Pip the seed closed his tiny eyes. And he began to dream. Not of flying… but of growing. He dreamed of sending a little root down, down, down… and a little green sprout up, up, up into the warm sun. He dreamed of the beautiful flower he would one day become.
