Shelly the snail tasted the morning on a single, glistening drop of dew. Last night, we dreamed of Whisp, the softest wind, who danced through the garden. That same gentle breeze had carried this perfect drop right to the edge of Shelly's favorite clover leaf. She sipped it slowly. It tasted like sky and cool night and the promise of sunshine. From her leaf, the whole garden looked like a giant's playground. Blades of grass were tall green towers.

A pebble was a great gray mountain. And today, Shelly felt adventurous. A sweet, wonderful smell was drifting from somewhere far away. Where was it coming from? She had to know. Slowly, so slowly, she began her journey. She slid off the clover leaf, leaving a tiny, shimmery trail of silver behind her. Her path was a map of her morning. She moved past a beetle, tucked in and still dreaming. She watched a line of ants march by, each one carrying something important.

They moved so FAST. But Shelly didn't mind being slow. Being slow meant you could see the world properly. She saw the tiny hairs on a dandelion stem. She saw the five perfect black spots on a ladybug's back, who was polishing her bright red shell. “Good morning,” buzzed the ladybug. “The strawberries are especially sweet today.” Strawberries! So that was the smell. The ladybug pointed with one tiny leg. “Just past the tall green forest,” she said, gesturing toward a patch of mint.

For Shelly, it really was a forest. She pushed her way through the fragrant leaves, the minty smell tickling her nose. And then she saw it. It wasn't a giant bush, not to a person. But to Shelly, it was a magnificent tree, and hanging from one of its branches was a treasure. A single, wild strawberry, glowing like a ruby in the morning light. It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The source of that wonderful, sweet smell.

She made her way up the stem, a long and careful climb. At the very top, she took a tiny, delicate bite. Oh. It was sweet, and warm from the sun, and it tasted like EVERYTHING wonderful. It was the perfect reward for her grand adventure. Now, her tummy was full and her heart was happy. She slid down the stem and found the perfect place to rest. The underside of a big, fuzzy strawberry leaf. It curled over her like a soft, green blanket.

Shelly tucked herself into her cozy shell, safe and warm, ready to dream of her journey. And outside her leafy bedroom, her little silver trail glistened on the ground, a shining map of a perfect day.
