Rory was a single, perfectly smooth, grey pebble, no bigger than your thumbnail. Just as we saw Pip the seed drift high above the world, Rory dreamed of a journey of his own, not on the wind, but in the cool, clear water that tickled his edge every day. He sat with his family of other stones on the riverbank, watching the water slide by, and wondered… what was just around the bend? One afternoon, a little ripple, a bit more playful than the others, washed all the way up the bank. It nudged him.

Just a tiny push. Rory wobbled. Then another, stronger ripple came, a gentle sigh from the river, and this time… he tumbled. A soft little plop and he was in. The world went quiet. The bright sun became a soft, green glow. Everything was muffled and slow. The river current, which had seemed so fast from the bank, was now a gentle hand, rolling him softly along the bottom. He wasn't scared. He was… curious. He rolled past a forest of tall, green weeds that swayed back and forth like they were dancing.

A tiny fish, with scales that shimmered like a dozen little rainbows, stopped and looked at him. Its tiny mouth made a little ‘o’ of surprise before it darted away. Rory kept rolling, a slow and steady tumble through this magical underwater world. He saw a snail carrying its swirly house on its back, moving so slowly it made Rory feel like he was flying. The current picked up just a little, and he started to roll a bit faster. He bounced gently off a larger, mossy rock and spun in a slow circle.

For a moment, he felt a little lost. The world was so BIG down here. Where was he going? He just wanted to find a nice, quiet place to rest. And then, just as he was beginning to feel tired, the river widened. The water slowed down, becoming lazy and calm. And right in front of him, he saw it. A patch of the most beautiful, golden sand he had ever imagined. It wasn't like the hard-packed dirt of the bank. It looked… soft. The gentle current gave him one last, sleepy push. He rolled right into the middle of the sandy patch and settled down with a soft little sigh into the grains.

It was like sinking into the coziest bed in the whole world. The water was calm here. The little rainbow fish swam slowly by again, as if to say hello and welcome. This wasn't just a place to stop. Oh, no. This was a new home. And nestled in his soft, sandy bed, Rory the little pebble dreamed of the gentle, flowing river all around him.
