In some parts of the world, thousands of fireflies blink their lights all at the exact same time. It’s a whole forest, pulsing with a single heartbeat of light. Just like Ollie the otter learned to find his own brave way to swim in the silvery river, sometimes we all need a little help finding our rhythm. Tonight, we’re going to a meadow, just as the sun goes to sleep.
The air is warm and smells like sweet clover. And all around, the fireflies are beginning their nightly dance. They zip and they zoom, little stars come down to play. But not all of them. Deep in the tall, soft grass, one little firefly is hiding. His name is Flicker. Flicker watches the beautiful, swirling lights. He sees them paint glowing pictures in the dark. A part of him, a tiny little spark deep inside, wants so badly to join them.
To fly high and flash his light for everyone to see. But another feeling, a heavy, quiet feeling called shyness, holds him down. What if his light isn't bright enough? What if he flashes at the wrong time? The other fireflies look so happy, so sure of their dance. They are a big, bright family of light. And Flicker... well, Flicker feels very, very small. And very alone.
He tucks his little light down, trying to hide it, hoping no one will notice him at all. But someone did notice. Not his hiding, but his quietness. An older firefly named Luna drifted away from the big, sparkling dance. She didn't fly right up to Flicker. No, that would be too much. Instead, she landed on a clover blossom a little ways away. And then, she let out a single, soft, slow pulse of light.
It wasn't a dancing flash. It was a listening flash. A gentle, glowing "hello." She didn't move any closer. She just waited. Flicker saw her quiet light. And without even thinking, a tiny, shy pulse of light blinked from his own body in reply. It was so small, almost a secret. But Luna saw it. She gently pulsed her light back. A slow, warm conversation, happening without a single word.
Flicker felt the heavy feeling of shyness begin to melt, like a snowflake on a warm hand. He took a little breath. He lifted himself from the grass. He flew over to Luna. And for a moment, they just floated there, side by side. Two soft lights in the big, dark world. Then, together, they slowly drifted toward the dance. Flicker wasn't leading, but he wasn't hiding anymore either.
He was just... part of the light. He found that his little flash, added to all the others, made the night just a little bit brighter. And sometimes, all it takes is one gentle light to show another the way home.
