Did you know that some otters hold hands when they sleep in the water? It’s so they don’t float away from their family. Last time, we met a little mouse named Milo who was learning about big feelings. Today’s story is also about a big feeling… the one you get when you're a little bit scared of something new. Ollie the otter sat on the riverbank, his paws tucked underneath him. The river was a long, silvery ribbon that rushed and tumbled past. In his paws, he held his favorite pebble—a stone so smooth and grey it felt like a worry stone.
He watched his mama glide through the water, a sleek, happy shape dipping and diving. From the middle of the river, she called to him, her voice warm like the afternoon sun. "Come in, Ollie! The water is wonderful!" Ollie just shook his head. His heart did a little pitter-pat against his ribs. The river looked too big. Too fast. Too… everything. He saw his brother and sister splashing in the current, their happy squeaks floating back to him. He wanted to join them.
He really did. But his paws felt like they were rooted to the soft, cool mud. His mama must have seen the worry on his face. She swam back to the bank, her dark fur shining. She nudged his cheek with her wet nose. "What is it, my little one?" she asked softly. Ollie couldn’t find the words. He just held up his pebble, as if to say, "This is safe. Out there is not." His mama didn't sigh. She didn't tell him to be brave. She just sat down beside him, her warm body pressing against his.
"You know," she said quietly, "when I was your size, this river seemed like a big, roaring monster to me, too." Ollie looked up, surprised. His brave, swimming mama… had been scared? She pointed with her nose to a small, quiet inlet just beside the main river. The water there was still and clear, and tiny little fish darted beneath the surface. "What if we don't go in the big river?" she whispered. "What if we just start there? We can just dip our paws." Ollie looked at the little pool.
It didn't roar. It barely even whispered. He looked at his mama's kind eyes. He took a tiny, deep breath that puffed out his chest. Slowly, he put his special pebble down on a patch of soft moss. Then, he reached out his small paw and placed it in his mama's. Together, they slid into the quiet water. It was cool, not cold. Gentle, not fast. Ollie felt the water tickle his whiskers. He let go of his mama’s paw for just a second… and kicked his back feet. He floated!
He was swimming. A tiny giggle bubbled up from his throat. He splashed his tail, sending little sparkling drops into the air. From his calm little pool, he looked out at the big, rushing river. It didn't look like a monster anymore. It just looked like an adventure, waiting for another day.
