Under the silver light of a full moon, a tiny hedgehog named Pipkin found a star tangled in a patch of clover. Pipkin was just waddling home to his cozy burrow at the root of a great oak tree. His little nose twitched, smelling the sweet night air and the damp earth. But then, he saw it. A soft, warm glow coming from the clover patch. It wasn't a firefly. It was too steady for that. It pulsed gently, like a tiny, sleepy heart. Pipkin crept closer.
There, nestled among the green leaves, was a perfect little star. It had five points and shone with a light that felt like warm honey. The star wasn't twinkling happily, though. Its light seemed a little sad, a little lost. Pipkin nudged it gently with his nose. The star pulsed a little brighter, but it didn’t move. It wanted to be back in the sky, with all its brothers and sisters. Pipkin knew, in his small hedgehog heart, that he had to help.
But how do you put a star back in the sky? He tried rolling it up a little hill, but it just tumbled back down. He tried to toss it with his snout, but it was too heavy for such a little fellow. He sat down with a huff, his prickles drooping. The little star pulsed beside him, and Pipkin felt a wave of its loneliness. He looked up at the vast, dark sky, full of shimmering lights so far away. Then, he heard a soft sound. "Hoo-hoo...
who has a star down there?" Pipkin looked up. Perched on a low branch was Hooten, the old, wise owl. His eyes were like big, golden moons. Pipkin explained everything. Hooten blinked slowly, thinking. "Stars are tricky," he hooted softly. "They need a lift. And they love light." Hooten then called out, a soft trill in the quiet woods. From the shadows, a tiny light zipped over. It was Flicker, the firefly. Hooten had a plan. "Pipkin," he said, "you must carry the star to the very top of the Great Oak.
I will guide you. Flicker will shine his light to show the star the way home." So, very carefully, Pipkin let the little star climb onto his back, its warmth sinking through his quills. He began to climb the old oak tree, branch by sturdy branch. Hooten flew just ahead, his silent wings showing the safest path. And Flicker, the firefly, danced around them, his light a brilliant beacon in the dark. Finally, they reached the highest branch, so high they could almost touch the moon.
Pipkin tilted his back. The little star slid off, and for a moment, it just hovered there. Then, with a happy pulse of light, it began to float up… and up… and up… until it found its very own spot in the night sky. It twinkled once, a bright, special twinkle, just for Pipkin. Pipkin watched it for a long, happy moment. Then he made his way back down the tree, his heart feeling as warm and bright as the star he had saved. He curled up in his nest of leaves, cozy and safe, and fell asleep dreaming of a new, friendly star winking down at him from the deep, velvet sky.
