The inner ear of a flibbertigibbet contains a tiny, crystallized bubble of pure nonsense. This week’s Grand Festival of Un-Gravity is, in its own way, a direct challenge to the very same seriousness we saw in Glimmerwick’s Napping Decree. Welcome to the festival. Here, gravity is understood not as a fundamental force of nature, but as a failure of imagination. It is a mental habit. A rut. To float is simply to forget you are supposed to fall.
Tents drift a hundred feet overhead, tethered by ropes of spun sugar. The air is thick with the gentle blorp-squish of passing grumphs and the low, vibrational hum of a thousand beings collectively refusing to be pulled down. The main event, the reason for the season, is the Ritual of the Glimmer-Gong. A single flibbertigibbet must ascend to the highest point of the festival grounds—the Spire of Improbability—and strike a gong forged from solidified starlight.
This year, the honor fell to a young participant named Ploom. And here is the problem. Ploom was a worrier. As he stood at the base of the spire, he tried to empty his mind. He tried to think of clouds, of bubbles, of the theoretical lift generated by a particularly fluffy thought. But the more he tried not to think about gravity, the more it clung to him. His feet felt like lead. He could feel the planet’s core pulling on his very socks. The crowd grew silent.
The Whiffle-Wobble, a state of collective existential dread that could cause the entire festival to plummet, was imminent. Then, an elder flibbertigibbet, whose name was a series of low whistles, glided down beside him. The elder didn’t tell Ploom to clear his mind. That’s amateur-hour thinking. Instead, the elder leaned in and whispered a single, profoundly powerful phrase into Ploom’s ear. Snickerdoodle-doo. Ploom blinked. Snickerdoodle… doo?
The concept was so perfectly, exquisitely pointless that it crashed his anxious mind. It was a thought so glorpy, so utterly devoid of meaning, that it created a vacuum. The thought of gravity, a comparatively simple and boring idea, was shoved out. And with a gentle foomp, Ploom’s feet lifted from the ground. He wasn’t floating by emptiness. He was being propelled upward by the sheer propulsive force of concentrated absurdity. He drifted up, past the bobbing food stalls, past the silent, waiting grumphs.
He reached the Glimmer-Gong. He struck it. The sound was not a chime. It was the sound of a question mark tasting sherbet for the first time. The Whiffle-Wobble was averted. The festival was safe. We see this pattern in our own world. We call them “icebreakers” or “creative retreats.” We try to engineer moments of Un-Gravity, to escape the pull of quarterly reports and strategic imperatives. We think that by playing a silly game, we can achieve a state of productive whimsy.
But we miss the point. The flibbertigibbets understand that silliness is not the means to an end. It is the end. It is the fundamental, irreducible force that holds their world together, and aloft.
