The oldest pebbles on Earth are over three billion years old. Just last night, we saw Luna the bat look up at the big, ancient moon, didn't we? Well, tonight, our story is about something just as old, and just as full of quiet wonder. Our story is about Pip. Pip was a very small pebble. He was perfectly smooth and the color of a soft grey cloud. For a long, long time, he had rested on the bank of a winding river.

He watched the seasons change. He felt the warm sun and the cool rain. He saw fuzzy caterpillars inching up green stems and listened to the birds sing their morning songs. He was a quiet watcher. One afternoon, the sky grew dark. Soft, fat raindrops began to fall. Pitter-patter on the leaves. Plink-plonk on the water. A little stream of rainwater trickled down the bank, right toward Pip. It nudged him gently.

Then it nudged him again. He started to roll... slowly at first, then a little faster. And with a tiny, quiet... plip... he was in the river! Oh, what a surprise! The water was cool and it pushed him along. He tumbled and turned in the gentle current. It wasn't scary at all. It felt like a slow, wonderful dance. He saw the world from a brand new place. Tall green reeds waved at him like old friends. A tiny silver minnow, with eyes like little black beads, swam right up to him, wiggled its tail, and darted away.

Above him, on the shiny surface of the water, a water strider skated by on its long, delicate legs. Pip had never seen one from below before. The river carried him around a bend. There, standing at the water's edge, was a young deer. It dipped its head for a drink, its big, brown eyes soft and calm. Pip floated right past, a tiny secret observer on a grand adventure. Then, the river began to slow down. The tumbling stopped.

Pip felt himself drifting gently downward, through the clear, clear water. The sun, which had come out from behind the clouds, sent rays of light straight down into the river. And where the light touched the bottom... it was like a thousand tiny stars had scattered there. Pip landed with a soft little poof on a bed of warm sand. He had arrived in a quiet pool. Here, the water was still and the sunlight made everything sparkle.

He wasn't alone. All around him were other pebbles. Some were white like milk, some were red like berries, and one even had a perfect white stripe running all the way around it. They were a silent, colorful family, resting together at the bottom of the sparkling pool. Pip was home. He could feel the gentle warmth of the sun through the water. He could watch the little fish swim lazy circles above him. He had traveled so far, and found the most beautiful, peaceful place in the whole wide world.

And there, in his quiet, sunlit home, the little grey pebble rested.
