A single little brown bat can eat up to one thousand mosquitos in just one hour. That's a lot of snacks for a little creature of the night, isn't it? It reminds me of the moonlit woods where Milo the Mushroom lived, full of tiny wonders just waiting to be found. Tonight’s story is about another little creature of the night, on her very first adventure. Luna, a tiny fruit bat, clung to her mother's soft fur.
They were high up in the hollow of an old oak tree, their cozy home. All her brothers and sisters had already flown out for the night. But Luna’s tiny heart was beating like a little drum. Tonight was supposed to be her first flight. She peeked out of the hollow. The world outside looked so big… and so dark. Her mother nuzzled her. "It's alright to be a little scared, my sweet Luna," she whispered. "But the night has secrets to share with you.
Wonderful secrets." Luna shivered. "What if I fall?" she squeaked. Her mother smiled, a soft, gentle thing. "Then I will catch you. But you won't fall. Your wings know just what to do. They have been dreaming of the wind." Luna looked at her own wings. They were like thin, leathery blankets, folded up tight. She stretched one out, then the other. They felt wobbly. Below, the world was quiet. The wind whispered through the leaves, a soft shushing sound.
"Just a little push," her mother said gently. "Trust the air. It will hold you up." Luna took a deep breath. She could smell the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine on the breeze. She could hear the far-off chirp of a cricket. She wanted to be brave. So, she closed her eyes… she took a tiny hop… and she let go. For a moment, she felt a lurch, a feeling of falling. But then, something magical happened. The wind caught her.
It lifted her up, soft and sure, like a gentle hand. Luna opened her eyes. And she gasped. Above her, hanging in the deep velvet sky, was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. A giant, glowing pearl. The Moon. It bathed everything in a soft, silver light. "Oh," she whispered. All around the moon, tiny diamonds were scattered across the sky. Stars. Her mother glided up beside her. "See, my love? I told you it was wonderful." Together, they flew.
Luna dipped and soared, feeling the cool air rush past her. She saw the river below, a ribbon of silver. She saw the tops of the trees, sleeping under the moonlight. This wasn't scary at all. It was beautiful. It was like dancing in a dream. After a long, lovely flight, they returned to the old oak tree. Luna snuggled back into her mother’s fur, her little body tired but her heart full of starlight. She was no longer afraid of the dark.
The dark was her friend, full of soft light and quiet magic. And as she drifted off to sleep, she dreamt of gliding through a sky full of diamonds.
