The first shadow to run away belonged to Mayor Thistlewick’s cat. It just… peeled itself off the cobblestones and fluttered away like a dark butterfly. You thought Pip finding the Impossible Key last week was strange? This was something else ENTIRELY. Suddenly, it was happening everywhere. A baker’s shadow wiggled free and started juggling invisible loaves of bread. A little girl’s shadow hopped off the ground and started playing hopscotch in mid-air. It was chaos! But… happy chaos? Nobody was getting hurt, but everyone was VERY confused. Their feet felt… empty. Too light. People tried to grab their shadows, but their hands went right through them, like trying to catch smoke.

The shadows would just giggle—a sound like rustling leaves—and dance away. Pip watched it all, wide-eyed. While the grown-ups were running in circles, Pip noticed something. All the shadows… every single giggling, dancing, runaway shadow… was drifting in the same direction. Past the Fizz-Pop Candy Shop. Up toward the Whispering Falls. They were like a river of darkness, all flowing uphill. So Pip followed. The trail of dancing darkness led straight to the Glimmer-Geyser. But the geyser wasn't shooting water. It was shooting pure, shimmering LIGHT. And in the middle of this fountain of light, hundreds of shadows were having the most incredible party you have ever seen.

They were somersaulting, cartwheeling, and weaving through the light, sparkling like the night sky. At the bottom of the geyser, a crystal pulsed with a gentle, joyful glow. It was a Sunstone, a rare gem that was usually kept deep inside the mountain. It must have rolled into the geyser! Its light was so happy, so playful, it was calling every shadow in Glimmerbrook to come and dance. And that’s when Pip understood. The shadows weren’t running AWAY. They were running TO something! They weren't lost, they were having FUN. The adults who had followed Pip wanted to charge in and turn off the geyser, to grab the Sunstone and end the party.

But Pip knew that would just scare them. It wouldn’t feel right. There had to be a way to ask them to come home. Pip looked down. Their own shadow was wiggling at their feet, desperate to join the party. So Pip did something small. Something quiet. Pip started to hum. Just a simple, soft little tune their mom always hummed at bedtime. And Pip’s shadow… stopped wiggling. It swayed back and forth, listening to the music. It remembered. It remembered being connected. Being a team. Pip looked at the mayor. “Everyone,” Pip whispered, “You have to SING. A song that feels like home.” So they did. The baker hummed a tune he used while kneading dough.

The little girl sang her favorite lullaby. Slowly, a gentle wave of music washed over the Glimmer-Geyser. One by one, the dancing shadows paused. They turned from the bright light of the Sunstone and listened to the familiar sounds. They remembered their people. And slowly, like balloons drifting back to earth, the shadows floated out of the light, across the grass, and settled softly back at the feet of their owners. The town felt whole again. And that evening, Pip stood in the town square, doing the silliest dance imaginable, just to watch their shadow perfectly copy every single move.
