The world began with a tiny snap. It wasn't a big, booming sound like the deep sea rumbles our friend Coral the seashell heard, but a quiet little thip that was just for Flicker. Flicker was a feather, small and soft and grey, with a tip of snowy white. And in that tiny moment, it let go of the warm robin's wing it had called home. Suddenly, it was floating. The wind, a gentle giant, scooped it up, up, UP. The world below became a beautiful, bumpy quilt of greens and browns. "Oh!" Flicker whispered, though it had no voice.
It saw a patch of flowers so bright red they looked like jewels scattered on the grass. Flicker wanted to get closer, to see if they smelled as sweet as they looked. But the wind had other ideas. Whoosh! It carried Flicker higher, past the top of the tallest oak tree. From here, Flicker could see everything. It saw a ribbon of silver water that wiggled through the fields. It saw tiny, busy ants marching in a line on a fence post. It saw a fluffy white cat sleeping in a patch of sun. Then, the wind got a little… silly.
It tumbled Flicker end over end, like a little acrobat. For a moment, Flicker felt dizzy. The world was a swirl of blue and green. It was a little bit scary, but also… a little bit fun. The wind spun it around a big, yellow butterfly, and they danced together for a moment before the breeze carried Flicker on. And then, just as suddenly as it started, the gust softened. The wild dance was over. The wind became a soft, warm breath, and Flicker began to drift down, down, down. It wasn't falling. It was… gliding.
Spiraling in slow, lazy circles. The world didn't rush by anymore. Instead, it came up to meet Flicker, slow and gentle. The giant oak tree became a tree again. The green quilt became individual blades of grass. Flicker drifted past a window where someone was sleeping, their breath making little clouds on the glass. It floated over a tiny puddle that held the whole, big sky in its reflection. And then, it saw her. A little girl, with hair the color of sunshine, sitting so quietly in the grass. She was building a house out of twigs and moss.
It was a perfect little house, but it was missing something. Flicker landed, soft as a thought, right on the little girl's outstretched hand. She gasped, a tiny, happy sound. Her fingers gently closed around the feather. "You're perfect," she whispered. She carefully tucked Flicker into the mossy roof of the little twig house, right at the very top, like a flag. Flicker was no longer lost. It wasn't just a feather on the wind anymore. It was the finishing touch. It was home.
