The average adult takes about twenty-three thousand breaths a day. In our last session, we used the four-seven-eight breath to interrupt a stress cycle. Today, we use the breath to build a foundation of calm. We’ll practice what’s known as Sama Vritti. In Sanskrit, it means “equal fluctuation.” Or, Equal Breathing.
The goal isn't to force anything. It's to find a smooth, even rhythm. Inhale, hold, exhale. All for the same count. This practice builds stability. It quiets the noise. So find your seat. Let your spine be long, but not rigid. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. First, a full exhale.
Let all the air go. Now, breathe in through the nose… two… three… four. Gently hold the breath… two… three… four. And slowly exhale… two… three… four. Hold the breath out… two… three… four. Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four.
Continue on your own now. Finding your own steady count of four. Notice the rhythm. A simple, predictable pattern. Your body knows this rhythm. There is no rush. There is only this breath. And the next. The space between the inhale and the exhale... that's where the stillness is. Let your attention rest in that quiet space.
When you're ready, let the pattern go. Just return to your natural breath. Noticing any shift. Any new space you've created. This tool is always with you. One minute at your desk. Five minutes before a meeting. It brings you back to center. One steady breath is an anchor you can drop anytime, anywhere.
