A five-minute session of diaphragmatic breathing can lower your body's primary stress hormone, cortisol, by more than twenty percent. In our last session, we talked about building a foundation of daily calm. Today, we use the physical key that unlocks it. Let’s begin. Find a position that feels supported.

You can be sitting upright, with your feet flat on the floor. Or lying down, with your knees bent or your legs extended. Whatever allows your body to feel held. Allow your eyes to drift closed, or soften your gaze on a single point in front of you. Now. Take your right hand and place it gently on your upper chest.

Take your left hand and place it on your belly, just above your navel. These hands are your guides. They will tell you where the breath is moving. For the next few minutes, our only goal is to breathe into the lower hand. To let the upper hand remain still. First, let’s empty the air completely.

A slow exhale through your mouth. Now… a slow, deep breath in through your nose. Feel the air travel down, past your chest, and into your belly. Feel your belly expand like a balloon, pressing gently into your left hand. The hand on your chest should barely move. And now, a slow, controlled exhale through pursed lips, as if you’re blowing through a straw.

Feel your belly fall, drawing back in towards your spine. Notice the left hand lowering with it. That is one breath. We will do it again. Inhale through the nose… belly rises. Exhale through the mouth… belly falls. Good. Let’s find a rhythm. We will breathe in for a count of four, and out for a count of six.

The longer exhale is what signals safety to your nervous system. Together now. Inhale, two, three, four. Feel the belly lift. Exhale, two, three, four, five, six. Feel the belly soften. Again. Inhale through the nose… one, two, three, four. Exhale through the mouth… one, two, three, four, five, six.

If you notice your chest moving more than your belly, that’s alright. It is a common pattern. Do not fight it. Simply… gently… guide your next inhale down. Inviting the breath deeper. Continue on your own now. Following that rhythm. In for four. Out for six. Your attention on the feeling of your lower hand rising… and falling.

The cool air as it enters. The warm air as it leaves. This simple movement is a reset button. Available to you in ANY moment. You are not forcing relaxation. You are creating the conditions for it. Let’s take one final, deep breath together. The deepest one yet. Inhale fully, fill the belly.

And a long, slow, complete exhale. Let it ALL go. You can let your hands rest now. Allow your breathing to return to its natural rhythm. Just notice how you feel. This quiet is not an accident. You created it.
